Comparatives-Five Rules
Usage: Comparative adjectives are used to compare differences
between the two objects they modify (larger, smaller, faster, higher).
They are used in sentences where two nouns are compared,
Rule number 1
Add ER to the majority of adjectives

- Faster
- Taller
- Smaller
- Richer
Examples:
The tiger is faster than the zebra
The giraffe is taller than elephant
The earth is smaller than Jupiter
Alberto is richer than Alfonso
Rule number 2
Monosyllabic
To adjectives that end in CVC I must duplicate the last consonant and add ER
-Fatter
-Bigger
-Hotter
Examples:
Leandro is fatter than Esteban
My car is bigger than your car
My toy is bigger than your toy
February is hotter than may
Rule number 3
The adjectives that end in Y.
You must replace the letter Y by i and then add ER

-Hungrier
-Happier
-Heavier
Examples:
You are hungrier than your sister
Krusty is happier than Homer
The elephant is heavier than the mouse
Rule number 4
You must use MORE if the adjective has more than two syllables

-More Expensive
-More Beautiful
-More Interesting
-More Intelligent

Example:
The red car is more expensive than the blue one.
The flower is more beautiful than the leaf
The classroom is more interesting than the park
Lisa is more intelligent than Bart
Irregular Comparatives
The adjective change completely
-Good-Better
-Bad - Worse
-Little- less
-Far- Further
Examples:
Laura is better in math than Luisa
Mariana is better in science than Pepita
Brutus is worse than Diggory
El Rosal is less polluted than Bogotá
My mother is further than my grandpa
La Vega is further than Bogotá
SUPERLATIVE-SIX RULES
Usage: Superlative adjectives are used to describe an object which is at the upper
or lower limit of a quality (the tallest, the smallest, the fastest, the highest). They
are used in sentences where a subject is compared to a group of objects.
Rule number 1
Add EST to the majority of adjectives

-Tallest
-Shortest
-Oldest
-Newest
Examples:
The oldest building in the world
The shortest person in Colombia
The tallest man in the world
The newest city in the world
The newest hair salon in the city
The newest person in the city
Rule number 2
Add ST to the adjectives which end in E
-Bravest
-Nicest
-Safest
Examples
The dog is the bravest animal in the world
The nicest girl in the school
The safest bank in Bogotá
The safest road in Colombia
Rule number 3
Duplicate the consonant and add EST if the adjective end in vowel + consonant
(Except when the adjective end in W)
-Fattest
-Biggest
-Thinnest
Examples:
The fattest man in the world
The biggest man in the house
The thinnest girl in the school
The elephant is the fattest animal in the world
Rule number 4
Replace the letter Y by i and add EST
-Spiciest
-ugliest
-happiest
Example:
The spiciest food in the world is in Mexico
The ugliest ogre in the world
The happiest party in the school
Rule number 5
You must use MOST if the adjective has more than two syllables
-Most Important
-Most Modern
-Most Expensive
Examples:
The most important sculpture in the world
The most modern tv in the world
The most expensive bicycle in the world
The most expensive computer in Colombia
Irregular adjectives
The adjective change completely
-Good – Best
-Bad – worst
-Far – furthest
Examples:
The best cellphone in the world
The best dog in the world
The best friend in my school
Camilo is the worst at soccer
The COVID-19 is the worst virus in the world
The furthest village in the country
The worst day in the week is Monday
James is the best footballer in the Colombia
