HEAD STOCK MECHANISMS

There r two types of headstock driving mech.

Back geared mechanism.
All geared mechanism.
Back geared mechanism
Used for reducing the spindle speed.

For getting direct speed, back gear is not engaged.

The flat belt is changed for diff.steps.

Getting slow speeds, back gear is engaged by lever L

& lock pin is engaged.
All geared headstock
 It is commonly used in modern lathes.

 Gives wider range of spindle speeds.

 More power can be transmitted.

 Belt shifting is eliminated.

 Vibration of spindle is reduced.

 Gears meshing

G1,G2&G3 ----- G4,G5,G6.

G7,G8,G9 ------ G4,G5,G6 Totally nine speeds.

G 1 --- G4,G7 we can get a speed of G1/G4 XG4/G7.

Feed Mechanism
Feed : the movement of the tool relative to the
work is termed as feed. Types : Longitudinal,
cross & Angular
Longitudinal & cross feed can also be given
automatically, for this the motion is transmitted
from headstock spindle to carriage. This is done
by means of the following units :
Tumbler gear Mechanism.

Quick change gear box.

Apron mechanism.
Tumbler gear mechanism
Used to change the direction of lead screw
&feed rod.
By engaging tum.gear , the carriage can be
moved automatically from tailstock to
headstock.
During thread cutting & automatic feed this is
used.
TUMBLER GEAR MECHANISM
Tumbler gear mechanism
Quick change gear box
 It is used to get various power feeds in lathe.
 Shaft A has got diff size of gears &keyed with
cone gear.
 Shaft B has gear & it receives 9 diff. speeds from
shaft A by the use of sliding gear.
 Shaft B is connected to Shaft C through 4 cone
gears .
 shaft C gets 9 X 4 = 36 speeds.
 Shaft C is connected to lead screw, used for
thread cutting & feed rod is used for automatic
feed.
Quick change gear box
Apron Mechanism
Used for transforming rotary motion of the feed rod & the
leadscrew into feed motion of the carriage.
Lead screw & feed rod is getting power from spindle gear through
tumbler gears.
Power is transmitted from feed rod to the worm wheel through
gears A,B,C,D & worm.
Feed check knob ‘E’ in neutral position, manual hand feed is given.
Feed check knob ‘E’ is push-in, rotating gear G will be engaged to
H.Then power will be transmitted to pinion I. so automatic feed will
take place.
For thread cutting half nut is engaged by half nut lever
