Zoonotic disease
An infectious disease caused by a pathogen (an infectious agent, including
bacteria, viruses, parasites, prions, etc) that has jumped from non-human animals
(usually vertebrates) to humans.
Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasma gondii
● Transferred from undercooked seafood and cleaning your cat’s
litter.
● Mostly asymptomatic, severe symptoms in those with weak
immune systems or pregnant women.
● Cats become infected through hunting outside
● Prevention: keep cat indoors/cook seafood properly
Giardias
What is it?

Disease caused by
microscopic parasite
called Giardia How Do you Get it?

Ingesting or swallowing the


parasite
Symptoms
Diarrhea Greasy stools
Gas Stomach pain
Nausea/ Vomiting Dehydration
Salmonella

● Can be contracted from handling reptiles, amphibians, and baby chicks and
ducks
● Symptoms: diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps
● Prevention: wear gloves while handling or wash hands immediately after
handling these animals
Lyme Disease
➔ This disease can infect people and some species of domestic animals (cats,
dogs, horses, and cattle) causing mild to severe illness
➔ Symptoms (in dogs): fever, loss of appetite, lethargic, swelling of joints
(start to show after about a week)
➔ Transmitted to humans, dogs, and other animals by certain species of ticks
(bite of a tick)
➔ Prevention: keeping your dog from being exposed to ticks. Ticks are found
in grassy, wooded, and sandy areas. Frontline. Vaccine.
Avian Influenza
➔ A strain of influenza that not only affects birds but also can be transmitted to
humans
➔ Incubation period of 2-8 days
➔ Common symptoms like sore throat, cold, cough, muscle aches
➔ Spread through the mucous and feces of infected birds
Rabies
● Rabies is a virus that attacks the nervous system and is fatal once symptoms develop.
It is passed to humans through bites and scratches from infected animals

● What kind of animals can get it? ● What are the symptoms?
(Mammals) - Fever, depression
-dogs,cats, bats, racoons, skunks, -Agitation
foxes, etc. -Painful spasms followed by excessive saliva
-Hallucinations
-Partial paralysis
● How does rabies travel?
-Spreads through infected animal’s saliva
