OBJECTIVE
 To prevent accidents at the level crossings.
 To indicate the speed and position of the train
in each compartment.

12/08/2021 ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING 4

ABSTRACT
 The technology used in this project is GPS.

 This project has two modules.

 One module is to display the distance between the train

and the level crossings.
 Another module is used to display the position of train in
all compartments.

NEED FOR THE PROJECT
 In India totally there are 24,313 level crossings.

 In a survey it was found that 40% of the accidents in

railway occur at level crossings.
 In a survey, it was found that 420 accidents had occurred
in railways out of which 65 accidents are at level crossings.

DESCRIPTION
 The GPS satellite transmits the signal to the GPS receiver.

 The received signal contains the latitude and longitude

information of the train at that particular place.
 The signal from the receiver is given to the microcontroller.

 The microcontroller is preprogrammed with the latitude

and longitude information of all the stations.
 The position of the train is calculated and displayed in all
compartments.

DESCRIPTION
 A transmitter in the train transmits the received signal from
GPS to the receiver in the level crossing.
 A GPS receiver is placed in the level crossing to receive the
latitude and longitude information of that particular place.
 The controller operates on the signals and gives the distance
between the train and the level crossings.
 When the train arrives near the level crossing the indication
is given by a red signal and an alarm.

GPS
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a U.S. space-
based radio navigation system that provides
reliable positioning, navigation, and timing services.
It can be accessed free of cost.
GPS provides accurate location and time information
for an unlimited number of people in all weather,
day and night, anywhere in the world.

ABOUT GPS
 There are 30 GPS satellites -- called NAVSTARs launched
in 1989.
 The first 11 satellites, known as Group I and designed by
Rockwell International, were launched into orbit between
1978 and 1985.
 Each of these satellites contained one Cesium and two
Rubidium atomic clocks and could provide navigation and
standard positioning information.

ABOUT GPS
 The next group of 9 satellites are called Group II.

 These were the first to provide precision positioning information for

military use and to be able to operate for 14 days without contact with
the Ground Control Segment.

 Group II satellites contained four clocks two Cesium and two

Rubidium and were launched. They were designed to last 7.3 years and
two currently remain in operation.

 The most recent type, Group IIR, were designed by Lockheed Martin

currently 12 GPS satellites in orbit , the most recent launched in

November 2004.

ADVANTAGES
 GPS works all 24 hours.

 Accidents can be prevented at the level crossings.

 The location of the train will be known by the passengers

in the compartment.
 It works in remote areas without any intervention.

 High Accuracy.

APPLICATIONS
 Mainly GPS technology was developed for the
navigation purposes in militaries(ie)used to identify
the victim places or their aircrafts etc.
 Easy to send and receive the messages.

 Easy to recover the stolen vehicles.
