• Hoe – is use to dig and cut trenches

• Spade – is used to mix and cut soil
• Spading fork – is used to dig and mix manure
• Shovel – is used to remove weeds
• Rake – is used to remove weeds
• Pick mattock is used to cut roots when digging

grow and maintain.
STEPS IN PREPARING A GARDEN SOIL FOR PLANTING

• LAYOUT the garden plots following your garden plan.

Use pegs to mark the corners of the plot then a
string to connect the pegs.
• Till and break the soil to loosen it. Dig the soil deep
enough so that the roots of the plants could easily
penetrate into the soil to absorb more nutrients. It
will also increase the water –holding capacity of the
soul.
• Pulverize the big lumps of soil and clean your plot.
Remove the stones and other materials. Level the
plot with a rake.
• Apply and spread organic fertilizer or compost
on top of the soil
• Combine the compost with the soil by digging
form one end of the plot to the other end.
• On the second digging of the soil, mix ashes
from burned wood into the soil to neutralize
its acidity.
• FERTILIZERS – are very useful and serve as enriching
materials used on land to increase its productivity.
• There are two (2) types of fertilizers
• Organic fertilizer – can be prepare from animal
manures, blood washing, and humus.
• Contain a percentage of nitrogen, phosphorus, and
potash that are necessary food for the growth of
plants.
• Your soil will maintain and improve its structure and
fertility. However, they should be applied properly to
obtain a good result. There are several ways of
producing them. One of these is composting.
• Inorganic fertilizers – are made of synthetic
materials. These are formulated to give
necessary nutrients to the plant.
• FIVE FORMS OF FERTILIZERS
1. Powdered
2. Concentrated liquid
3. Concentrated powder
4. Concentrated tablet
5. Pelleted or granular
• STEPS IN MAKING COMPOSTING..
• COMPOST is an organic fertilizer made form
dead plants and animals. Water, sunlight and
microorganisms will induce dead leaves, grass,
insects , and other waste materials to decay
and become natural fertilizers.
