Eight Parts of Speech

Noun
-is a word or phrase that represents a
person, a place, a thing and an animal
or a quality or idea
Example:
 The teacher told the children
to stop chattering in the class.
 John is good at French but
weak at History.
 The whale is in danger of
becoming extinct.
Verb
-is a word or group of words that
describes an action, experience or
expresses a state of being.
Example:
 Don’t try to run before you
can walk.
 Did you kiss anybody?
 Leave me alone!
Pronoun
-is used instead of a noun or noun phrase
in a sentence and it may take place of
the name of a person, place, or thing.
Example:
 You can’t blame him for
everything.
 The woman who called yesterday
wants to buy the house.
 Don’t tell her the truth.
Adjective
- describes, modifies or gives
more information about a noun
or a pronoun.
Example:
 The little girl has a pink
hat.
 What a beautiful flower!
 Brown dog runs very fast.
Adverb
- modifies a verb, an adjective, or
another adverb and it tells how
often where, when.
Example:
 Yesterday, I ate my lunch
quickly.
 She eats very slowly.
 I baked the cake carefully.
Preposition
- combines with a noun or pronoun to
form a phrase that tells something
about another word in a sentence.
Example:
 There is a light on the table.
 I am going to my garden.
 The cat is sleeping under
the table.
Conjunction
- joins two words, ideas, phrases
together in a sentence and
shows how they are connected.
Example:
 I was hot and tired but still
finished it.
 I was sleepy so I went to bed early.
 You look so proud because he
won the competition.
Interjection
- expresses a strong feeling or
emotion and it can be a single
word or phrase.
Example:
 Hooray! I’ve already
graduated.
 Wow! I passed my English
exam.
 Oops! I spilled the milk.
