INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION

BALANCE
WEIGHT ACCURACY USING STANDARD WEIGHTS:

• Press the “TARE” key.

• Using forceps carefully pick up the 1 mg standard weight, place
it on the pan and wait for the balance to stabilize.
• Repeat steps using mass pieces of nominal weight values 5mg,
10 mg, 20mg, 50 mg, 100 mg and 500 mg.

• Acceptance criteria:
• Observed weight should be ±0.10 % of the certified value.
ECCENTRICITY TEST:

Press the “TARE” key on the key pad to zero the weight display.
Using forceps carefully pick up the 200 mg standard weight, place it on the centre (C) of the
pan and wait for the balance to stabilize.
Repeat steps by keeping the standard weight at the four corners of the pan (C1, C2, C3 and
C4) as shown in the diagram:

C1

C4 C C2

C3

Acceptance Criteria:
Observed weight should be ±0.10 % of the certified value and maximum weight deviation
of weights measured on sides with respect to weight measured in centre should not be
more than 0.05%.
LINEARITY TEST:

Press the “TARE” key on the key pad to zero the weight display.

Using forceps carefully pick up the 1 mg standard weight, place it on

the pan and wait for the balance to stabilize.

Repeat steps using mass pieces of nominal weight values 5mg, 10 mg,
50 mg, 100mg and 500 mg.
Plot a graph of observed values versus the certified values and
calculate the correlation coefficient.

Acceptance Criteria:
Correlation coefficient should be greater than or equal to 0.9995.
SENSITIVITY:
Using forceps carefully pick up the 500 mg standard weight,
place it on the pan and wait for the balance to stabilize.
Record the stabilized weight displayed

Observed value for 0.5 g standard weight in g x 100

Sensitivity (%) = ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Certified value of 0.5 g standard weight in g

Acceptance Criteria:
Observed sensitivity deviation should not be more than
0.05 % (between 99.95% and 100.05%).
REPEATABILITY TEST:
Press the “TARE” key on the key pad to zero the weight display.
Using forceps carefully pick up the 10 mg standard weight, place it on the
pan and wait for the balance to stabilize.
Record the stabilized weight displayed on annexure-I.
Repeat the step for more 9 times and record the weight.

Repeatability (%) = 2 x Standard Deviation of weighed value x 100

Desired smallest net weight in g

If standard deviation is less than 0.41d, where d is readability of balance

for weight used, then replace 0.41d instead of standard deviation.
Readability for 10mg is 0.0000001 g
Desired smallest net weight in g is 0.001 g

Acceptance Criteria: Repeatability should not be more than 0.10%.

Minimum weight = 2000 × Repeatability (S.D.)
