 Essentially storytelling

of an object, geographic feature, setting,
event, person, or image.

 Explaining the meaning of something
CLASSIFICATION
 Breaking a large subject into categories based on
consistent and useful principle of division
PERSUASION
 Convincing to believe and eventually acting on
someone’s belief or opinion
CAUSE – AND – EFFECT
 Shows causal relationships between events,
ideas, and trends.
 May be directly stated or merely implied by
the order in which the information is
presented
 May be used in historical and scientific
writing

TYPES OF WRITING PATTERNS
COMPARE – AND – CONTRAST
 Provides a way to look at similarities and
difference in two or more topics/subjects
 May be used to compare important points or
characteristics (point of comparison)
 Several ways of development: a) Subject – by –
subject organization; b) Point – by – point
organization
PROBLEM – SOLUTION
 A problem is stated and analyzed, with
one or more solutions are proposed and
examined.
 Often used in persuasive writing such as
editorials of proposals
SEQUENCE
Can be in terms of:
 chronological order in which the
events take place
 Spatial order, the order of things in
space
 Order of importance , from the most
important to the least important, or
vice versa.

MAIN IDEA & DETAILS
 A central idea about the topic is presented and
supported by details.
 Main idea: most important idea about the topic of a
text
 Supporting Details: words, phrases, sentences that
tell more about the main idea in form of examples,
facts, statistics, or quotes.
 MI can be stated or implied.
 Also called illustration (examples used to support)
