CLIMATE CHANGE AND ITS

IMPACT TO THE
PLUMBING PRACTICE

FERNANDO Y. PAMERON
RCE,CME,RMP
CLIMATE CHANGE as defined…

• Long term change in the statistical

distribution of weather patterns
• Any change in global temperature over
time due to natural variability or to human
activity
THEORY OF CLIMATE CHANGE

• COSMOCLIMATOLOGY

• GREENHOUSE THEORY

• ASTRONOMICAL THEORY
THEORY OF CLIMATE CHANGE

• COSMOCLIMATOLOGY
a theory presented by Larry Vardiman,
PhD-associating fluctuations of cosmic
rays in the sun’s electromagnetic fields
as the driving force for global warming.
THEORY OF CLIMATE CHANGE

• GREENHOUSE THEORY
excessive emission of CO2 and industrial
gases causing in-equilibrium to incoming
solar energy
THEORY OF CLIMATE CHANGE

• ASTRONOMICAL THEORY
consider the tilting of earth as cause for
temperature changes.
OUTCOME/EFFECTS OF CLIMATE
CHANGE
• RISING WORLD TEMPERATURES

• MELTING ICE CAPS

• RISING SEA LEVEL

• EXTREME WEATHER CONDITION

• CHANGING ECOSYSTEM
OUTCOME/EFFECTS OF CLIMATE

• RISING WORLD TEMPERATURES

Average increase of temperature at 1
degree Celsius since 1970
OUTCOME/EFFECTS OF CLIMATE
CHANGE
• MELTING ICE CAPS
Polar regions losing ice cap since 1970
and expected to be ice cap free by 2030
OUTCOME/EFFECTS OF CLIMATE
CHANGE
• RISING SEA LEVEL
Notable rise of sea level at 2 cm per year
since 1870 and far more in recent years
OUTCOME/EFFECTS OF CLIMATE
CHANGE
• EXTREME WEATHER CONDITION
Floods, monsoons, hurricanes,
heat waves hit headlines in
recent years
OUTCOME/EFFECTS OF CLIMATE
CHANGE
• CHANGING ECOSYSTEM
Warm world threatens environment.
Recent study reveal that quarter of
land animals and plants could be made
extinct by the middle of the century.
EFFORTS TO FIGHT CLIMATE
CHANGE/HIGHLIGHTS

EFFORTS TO FIGHT CLIMATE CHANGE IS

SPEARHEADED BY THE UNITED NATIONS
THROUGH THE UN CLIMATE CHANGE
COMMISSION (UNFCCC)
1st Conference in 1979
UN Action 1988- set up the Inter-Govern
mental Panel on Climate Change(IPCC)
1992 Rio de Janeiro- UNFCCC signed by 154
nations
EFFORTS TO FIGHT CLIMATE
CHANGE/HIGHLIGHTS
1997 KYOTO- Treaty signed by 178 countries
2007 BALI, INDONESIA
2008 UN CLIMATE CHANGE ACT

2010 CANCUN- assessed emissions,

green climate fund, slow reverse
destruction of trees, low carbon
technology

FORUM(NPRF) OF 2011

NPRF was held at Melbourne Conference

Center at Melbourne, Australia bringing
industry leaders and experts together to
present and discuss topics that directly
affect the plumbing industry.
NPRF 2011 ISSUES & CONCERNS

• SUSTAINABILITY AND ITS CONNECTION

WITH PLUMBING INDUSTRY

• GLOBALIZATION, INNOVATION OF
TECHNOLOGY

• TECHNICAL CHANGES
NPRF 2011 ISSUES & CONCERNS

SUSTAINABILITY AND ITS CONNECTION

WITH PLUMBING INDUSTRY
- everyday work of plumbers should
integrate sustainability with emphasis
on green plumbing
NPRF 2011 ISSUES & CONCERNS

• GLOBALIZATION, INNOVATION OF
TECHNOLOGY
-new products and technology for hot
water systems, fire sprinklers, water
neutral pools (installing rainwater tanks
and conservation measures.
NPRF 2011 ISSUES & CONCERNS

TECHNICAL CHANGES
UPDATING CODES AND REGULATIONS
NPRF 2011 ISSUES & CONCERNS

COMMON PROBLEMS/ISSUES:
1. USED OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF TOILET
PAPERS MAY RESULT ON CLOGGING PIPES
2. SWITCH TO “SERVICE AND SYSTEM
THINKING” TO MEET CHALLENGES FOR
GREEN POLICY
3. MOTIVATE USE OF GREEN ENERGY
4. MOTIVATE SAVING WATER
NPRF 2011 ISSUES & CONCERNS

COMMON PROBLEMS & ISSUES:

5. ROBUST WATER SYSTEMS TO MEET POSSIBLE
IMPACT OF WORSE WEATHER PATTERNS

6. PLUMBERS AS HEALTH WORKERS-FILTER THE

COMMUNITY AND PROTECT THE
ENVIRONMENT

7. WATER BORNE VIRUSES AS A RESULT OF

CHANGING WEATHER PATTERNS
IMPACT OF THE CLIMATE CHANGE
TO PLUMBING PRACTICE

Climate change, its effect and impact may

result but not limited to the following:
• POTABLE WATER SUPPLY PROBLEM
• DRAINAGE PROBLEMS
• PLANTS AND MACHINERIES PROBLEM
BRACING FOR POTABLE WATER
SUPPLY
In any eventuality, adequate potable supply
of water shall be assured to end-user by:
- Providing elevated water tanks
- Water-tight joints preventing entry of
foreign or contaminated waters
ENSURING DRAINAGE FLOW

Drain blockage causes severe problems on

plumbing amenities and adequate plan for
emergencies must be given.
- Possible installation of elevated vaults and
others.
PLANTS AND MACHINERIES

• Robust water and drainage pipe system

• Elevated plants and machineries
• Water-free area
• Firm joints and fittings
UNCERTAINTIES OF THE FUTURE

• BRACING FOR LESS DAMAGE

• PREPARE FOR THE WORST
END
