LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the End of this module You should :-

 Be able to Recognize the 7 QC Tools

 Know about the History & Background of 7 QC Tools

 Identify when to use correct Quality tools

 Be able to know why Quality tools are useful

 Be able to draw Statistical Inferences

33
HISTORY & BACKGROUND :-
Seven Basic Tools of Quality :

• The Seven Basic Tools of Quality (also known as 7 QC Tools)

originated in Japan when the country was undergoing major
quality revolution and had become a mandatory topic as part
of Japanese’s industrial training program.

• These tools which comprised of simple graphical and

statistical techniques were helpful in solving critical quality
related issues.

• These tools could be implemented by any person with very

basic training in statistics and were simple to apply to solve
quality-related complex issues.

• These Tools are developed by the person shown in the picture.

IMPORTANCE OF QUALITY TOOLS :-
Seven Basic Tools of Quality :

• Kaoru Ishikawa has stated that these 7 tools can

be used to solve 95% of all problems.

• The 7 Tools of Quality is a designation given to a

fixed set of graphical techniques identified as
being most helpful in troubleshooting issues
related to quality.

• They are used to analyze the production process,

identify the major problems, control fluctuations
of product quality, and provide solutions to avoid
future defects.

CHECK SHEET

88
Check sheet :-
What is Check sheet ?
• A structured, prepared form for collecting and analyzing data; a
generic tool that can be adapted for a wide variety of purpose.

Purpose of Check sheet ?

• Tool for collecting and organizing measured or counted data
• Data collected can be used as input data for other quality tools

When to Use a Check Sheet ?

• To collect data repeatedly by the same person or at the same
location.
• To collect data on the frequency or patterns of events, problems,
defects, defect location, defect causes, etc.
• To collect data from a production process
99
Check sheet :-
Check Sheet Procedure ? Benefits of Check sheet ?
• Collect data in a systematic and organized manner
• Decide what event or problem will be
observed. Develop operational definitions. • To determine source of problem
• Decide when data will be collected and for
how long.
• Design the form. Set it up so that data can be
• To facilitate classification of data (stratification)
recorded simply by making check marks or Xs
or similar symbols and so that data do not
have to be recopied for analysis. Label all • The check sheet is a simple and effective way to
spaces on the form. display data.
• Test the check sheet for a short trial period to
be sure it collects the appropriate data and is • It provides a uniform data collection
easy to use.
• Each time the targeted event or problem
occurs, record data on the check sheet.
