INTRODUCTION

Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) allows to

perform one-dimensional steady flow, one and two dimensional unsteady flow
hydraulics, sediment transport/mobile bed computations, water temperature modeling
and generalized water quality modeling. A key element is that all four components
mentioned use a common geometric data representation and common geometric and
hydraulic computation routines. In addition to the four river analysis components, the
system contains several hydraulic design features that can be invoked once the basic
water surface profiles are computed
OBJECTIVE

A study was conducted using HEC-RAS to investigate the characteristics of channels flow at Sungai
Linggi.

Objectives of this study were to:
1. Determine feasibility of HEC-RAS to sufficiently analyse the effectiveness of the channels.
2. Provide suggestions to solve flood by section modification.
3. Outline appropriate methodology in order to use HEC-RAS to analyse the effectiveness of the
channels.
4. Familiarise in using a common geometric data representation and common geometric and hydraulic
computation routine.

Study area
. The Linggi River (Malay: Sungai Linggi) is a river in Malaysia. It starts
from the foothills of the Titiwangsa Range. It starts from an area known
as Pantai at the foothills in Kg Jerlang. Linggi River, also known as
Batang Penar river starts from Ampangan to Kg Jerlang at Pantai. River
Linggi flows through from Pantai to Ampangan, Seremban, Rasah,
Mambau, Rantau, Linggi and ends at Kuala Linggi, Melaka. Before
1840, River Linggi was a main route to the people along the Linggi River
Valley. Since the Malacca Sultanate period, River Linggi was an ancient
main trade route. Some verbal-tellers said that small ships can through
deep to area known Pantai today. After the 1840s, River Linggi became a
tin trade route. Many towns and small towns were established along the
river bank as Rasah, Rahang, Seremban, Ampangan, Mambau, Kuala
Sawah, Rantau, Linggi and Pengkalan Kempas. Today, even though the
river is becoming narrower and the water level is decreasing, it is used as
a water source to the Seremban District
Chapter3: Methodology:
There are 8 channels that are failed with the overflow after 50
years, which are CH 0, CH 200, CH 300, CH 450, CH 600, CH
700, CH 900, CH 1150.

CHAPTER4: RESULT AND
DISCUSSION
As a results,The figure show the cross section of each channel before and after modification,
and the modification data for each channel

CHAPTER4: RESULT AND DISCUSSION
Proposed solution: All channel has been modified to prevent overflow for next 50
years. All the channels are modified with just expand the
bottom width and deepen the elevation to make a rectangular
shape.

CHANNEL TOTAL CUT AREA (m2)

DOWNSTREAM CH 0 9.88 According to Department of Irrigation and Drainage, the

CH 200 13.20
total excavation rate for drainage earthwork which is
excavation is about RM5.70 per m3. The depth for the
CH 300 12.50 rectangular drainage is about 1.5m. So the total volume all
CH 450 7.35 channels for cut area is 123 m3. So the estimation cost is
about RM701.10.
CH 600 7.98

CH 700 9.06

CH 900 11.00

CH 1150 5.12

UPSTREAM END CH 1377.5 5.91

TOTAL ALL CHANNELS 82.00

CONCLUSION

HEC-RAS model proved to be very helpful in gaining a better understanding of the hydraulics at Sungai Linggi.
Also, all of the objectives of this study have been successfully achieved. The feasibility of HEC-RAS to sufficiently
analyze the effectiveness of the channels has been determined. The flood problem encountered has been solved by
providing some suitable suggestions on the modification section in order to obtain the economically dimensions of
channels. On the other hand, the appropriate methodology has been outlined in order to use HEC-RAS for
analyzing the effectiveness of the channels. Lastly, the common geometric data representation and common
geometric and hydraulic computation routine have been familiarized through the regular practice of HEC-RAS.
