• Consciousness is closely related to attention but the processes are
definitely not identical.

• Cognitive Psychologists – Three interrelated issues concerned with

consciousness.

I. Our inability to bring certain thoughts into consciousness

II. Our inability to let certain thoughts escape from consciousness
III. Blindsight
1. Our inability to bring certain thoughts into
consciousness

To what extent do we
 Mindless reading – do not processing the meaning of
have access to our higher the material.

mental processes?  Mind wandering- thoughts shift from external

environment into favor of internal processing.
2.Our inability to let certain thoughts
escape from consciousness -

 Basically, he/she could not eliminate the undesirable thoughts.

 People engage in THOUGHTS SUPPRESSION, they try to

eliminate the thoughts, ideas, and images that are related to an
undesirable stimulus.

 Ironic Effects of Mental Control - Backfire

- It may be even more likely to
enter our consciousness.
3.Blindsight

 Is condition in which an individual with a

damaged visual cortex claims not to see an
object but he/ she can accurately report
some characteristics of the object, such as
its locations.

 Its simply ,visual cortex is damaged but your

eyes "see".

 “ I cannot see.”

 People with blindsight can report visual

attributes such as color, shape, and motion.
In Conclusion
 Our consciousness is not a perfect mirror
of our cognitive processes; its simply
cannot be explain how these processes
operate.

 You cannot simply erase the unwanted

thoughts from our consciousness.

 However, this convergence between our

consciousness and reality is often an
illusion.
