Step 1

Starting from a block of wood,

usually made of cedar, it is
divided into small boards with
slits to place the mines.

2
Step 2

When the graphite is in the company

these are taken to a mixer which
prepares a mixture of graphite clay and
water.
Once the mixture is done, it goes
through funnels and the graphite takes
on a mine aspect, then it goes through a
frying process.
in these they are immersed in a bath of
melted wax and oil, obtaining a harder
mine.

3
Step 3

Then glue is applied to the

grooves of the slats, the
graphite mines are placed in
one of them and the other is
placed on top.

4
Step 4
Once the glue is dry, another machine is
responsible for making slits on both sides of
the table where the pencils will separate.
First, they are cut from the top to the middle.
And then from the bottom until you find the
previous cut in the middle of the board.
Therefore, remember that the mines are not
pressed into the pencil, but are placed between
two slotted wooden slats.

5
Step 5

At this point, most pencils are

varnished in colors.
To do this, the pencils are dipped
in a colored paint pot and then
quickly dried.

6
Step 6
Afterwards, the name of the
firm and the degree of hardness
of the mine are stamped, making
it easier to recognize who has
made the pencils and if their
mine is soft or hard.

7
Step 7
Finally, the pencils will be
sharpened and undergo strict
quality control before leaving
the factory and heading to the
points of sale.

HB, 2B, 2H, B. They are numbers of pencils that allude to
distinctive of the typology to which they belong, based on
the amount of graphite that each one contributes. That is
why, depending on the number they present from them, we
will obtain more or less hardness and, therefore, a different
line.

10
Which pencil to use
Depending on the type of work, we will use one or the other
pencil.
Pencils H
They are widely used in architectural and technical drawing because
their finesse when using them makes very accurate profiles. In these
professional uses they are normally used from 4H upwards. Taking into
account that the highest number and that it writes so finely that it can be
difficult for us to see is 9H. They are also used many times to make the
first strokes of an artistic drawing, but in this type of drawings we will
only really use them to sketch and never to draw.

11
Pencils B

They are usually used in artistic drawing and are very

suitable for creating shadows. To generate uniform shading,
graphite smudges are normally used, which gives us
continuity and smoothness in the final result.

12
HB pencils

These pens are widely used by schoolchildren since they are

in the perfect balance between hardness and writing. They
are the typical pencils of those who only need to be able to
erase if we make a mistake. Without many more
expectations versus in pencil.

13
Pencils F

They are normally used as HB pencils, that is, they have a

medium hardness, but they stand out for being able to
sharpen at levels much higher than the HB standard. It can
be used for both normal writing and sketching. Also taking
into account that they are very easily erased, they are
indicated for technical or architectural drawings.

14
The tonal value scale

The scale of values that we have talked about all the time is
the European system, in which H indicates the hardness, B
for the darkness, and F for the degree of fineness.
In general, the graduation with which the hardness of the
pencils are organized, whether they are type H or type B.
The higher the number indicates the greater the hardness in
the case of H and the softer it is in the case of B.
