I. ESSENTIAL IDEAS

Unbalanced Chemical Equation

2 1 0
Subscript indicates number of
atom. For example, the number of
hydrogen atom in the reactant side
is 2.
Goal of Balancing Chemical Equation
The number of atoms of each
element in reactant side be equal with
the number of atoms of each element
in product side.
2 1 0
HOW? Change the coefficient of each
compound.
NEVER change the chemical formula!
_H2 (g)+ _O2 (g)→_H2O(l)
H=2 H=2
O=2 O=1

Just like in Math, coefficient is the

number before the chemical element
or compound.
2 1 0
Technique:
1. Find the suitable coefficient
that will make the number of
atoms of each element equal in
reactant and product side. You
can do TRIAL and ERROR.

2 1 0

2. When coefficient is written,
multiply the coefficient with the
subscript to get the total number
of atoms of each element.

H=2X2=4 H=2X2=4 ok
O=2X1 =2 O=1X2=2 ok

2 1 0

3. You may not write the coefficient
1.
4. All coefficients should be reduced
to least possible value. If all
coefficients are 2, reduce it to one,
similar with the principle of lowest
term in Math.
5. Final balanced equation:

2 1 0
II. LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Direction: Balance the chemical equations

below.
1. carbon + oxygen gas yields carbon
dioxide

2. Potassium chlorate when heated

produces potassium chloride and
oxygen gas

3. When magnesium is heated at
800 and nitrogen gas is passed
on it, it produces the greenish
yellow powder magnesium
nitride.
III. PROCESSING QUESTIONS
1. Why is it necessary not to
change the chemical
formula of a compound
when balancing equations?
