Characteristics of Research

1. Empirical – research is based on direct experi

ence or observation by the researcher.
2. Logical – research is based on valid procedur
es and principles.
3. Cyclical – research starts with a problem and
ends with a problem.
Characteristics of Research

4. Analytical – research utilizes proven analytical p

rocedures in gathering data, whether historical,
descriptive, experimental, and case study.

5. Critical – research exhibits careful and precise

judgment.
Characteristics of Research

6. Methodical – research is conducted in a metho

dical manner without bias using systematic met
hod and procedures.

7. Replicability – research design and procedures

are repeated to enable the researcher to arrive
at valid and conclusive results.

Characteristics of the Researcher
1. Intellectual Curiosity – researcher undertakes
deep thinking and inquiry of the things, proble
ms, and situations around him.

2. Prudence – researcher is careful to conduct his

study at the right time and at the right place wi
sely, efficiently, and economically.
Characteristics of the Researcher
3. Healthy Criticism – the researcher is always dou
btful as to the truthfulness of the results.

4. Intellectual Honesty – researcher is honest to c

ollect or gather the data or facts in order to arri
ve at honest results.
Characteristics of the Researcher

5. Intellectual creativity – a resourceful investigat

or always creates new researches.
He enjoys inventing unique, novel and original r
esearches, and considers research as his hobby.

Values of Research to Man

1. Research Improves quality of life – It has led m

an to search for ways for improving processes a
nd means which man love and find interesting.
Values of Research to Man

2. Research improves instruction – Modern teach

er introduces innovations and integrates the 3R
s (rational thinking, right conduct, and researc
h) in all subject areas in his teaching.
Values of Research to Man

3. Research improves students’ achievement – Th

e students’ achievement could be improve if th
e modern teacher keeps himself updated on iss
ues and trends about the modern methods and
strategies in teaching.
Values of Research to Man

4. Research improves teachers’ competence – res

earch oriented teacher always conduct research to im
prove his competence and produce graduates who res
pond to the socioeconomic development of the count
ry and can compete with other graduates of the world
.
Values of Research to Man
5. Research satisfies man’s needs – modern faciliti
es that satisfy man’s needs are all products of r
esearch.

6. Research reduces the burden of work

Values of Research to Man
7. Research has deep-seated psychological aspect
s – It challenges man to get rid of the danger of
stagnation. It is an open door to a better tomor
row and it guides him in his efforts to obtain go
od results which contribute to his satisfaction a
nd self-fulfilment.
Values of Research to Man

8. Research improves the exportation of food pro

ducts – Some international research agencies p
rovide financial support for the researches in th
e Philippines.
Values of Research to Man

9. Research responds to the economic recovery a

nd austerity measures of the country – Resear
ch outputs are converted to income generating
projects to train students to earn while they lea
rn.
Values of Research to Man

10. Research trains graduates to become responsi

ve to the economic development of the countr
y and compete globally.

TYPES OF RESEARCH
1. Basic Research – It seeks to discover basic trut
hs or principles. It is intended to add to the bod
y of scientific knowledge by exploring the unkn
own to extend the boundaries of knowledge as
well as to discover new facts, and learn more a
ccurately the characteristics of known without
any particular thought as to immediate practica
l utility.
TYPES OF RESEARCH
2. Applied Research – involves seeking new applic
ations of scientific knowledge to the solution of
a problem such as the development of new sys
tem or procedure, new device, or new method,
in order to solve the problem.

• Produces knowledge of practical use to man.

TYPES OF RESEARCH
3. Developmental research – this is a decision-ori
ented research involving the application of the
steps of the scientific method in response to an
immediate need to improve existing practices.
• If a researcher continues to find practical applic
ations from theoretical knowledge and use this
existing knowledge to produce useful products.

CLASSIFICATION OF RESEARCH

1. Library Research – this is done in the library wh

ere answers to specific questions or problems o
f the study are available.

2. Field research – research is conducted in a nat

ural setting.
CLASSIFICATION OF RESEARCH

3. Laboratory research – this is conducted in artifi

Types of Variable

1. Independent Variable – this is the stimulus vari

able which is chosen by the researcher to deter
mine its relationship to an observed phenomen
on.
Types of Variable

2. Dependent Variable – this is the response varia

ble which is observed and measured to determ
ine the effect of the independent variable. It ch
anges when independent variable changes.
Types of Variable

3. Moderator Variable – this is a secondary or spe

cial type of independent variable chosen by the
researcher to determine if it changes or modifi
es the relationships between the independent
and dependent variables.
Types of Variable
4. Control Variable – a variable controlled by the i
nvestigator in which the effects can be neutraliz
ed by eliminating or removing the variable.
5. Intervening Variable – a variable which interfer
es with the independent and dependent variab
les, but its effects can either strengthen or wea
ken the independent and dependent variables.
