Delhi Metro was needed due to increasing population, vehicles, accidents, and pollution in Delhi. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was established in 1995 and began construction in 1998, with the first section opening in 2002. Phase I cost Rs. 10,571 crores and included 65 km of track and 59 stations. Delhi Metro has high passenger capacity, uses less energy than roads, and reduces travel time and pollution. It is one of few profitable metro systems through cost control and additional revenue sources. The network now includes five lines totaling 138 km and 117 stations. Environmental measures help reduce greenhouse gases, noise, and air pollution.
