EXCRETION
Objectives
Teachers are expected to:
 Define excretion and distinguish it from
egestion
 Identify excretory products released
through the skin and lungs
Students are expected to:
 Understand the topic
 To complete any task given
What is excretion?
Excretion is the removal of toxic material,
waste product of metabolism and
excess substances from organisms.
The three major organs of excretion is the
lungs, skin and kidney.
What is egestion
Egestion is the passing out of undigested
foods as faeces, through the anus.
All organisms have some method of
excretion. Excretion operates through a
number of different methods, depending
on the species.
Unicellar organisms often have very simple
methods of excretion, involving dumping
wastes to the outside of the cell.
Multicellular organisms however, have to
deal with excretion on a number of levels.
Individual cells expel their waste which
then goes into the blood vessel or a
body cavity, from then the waste will be
excreted substances will make their way
out of the body.
Excretion in unicellular organisms
Excretion in this organism is relatively
easy. The cells intakes their food by
means of phagocytosis, it is then broken
down and used up. The remains then
leaves the body by exocytosis.
Excretion in multicellular organisms
Exretion is more complex. Animals have
specialized organisms that have specific
tasks in excretion.
All animals through the process of cellular
respiration produces water and carbon
dioxide as a by product. These products
are excreted through the lungs, gills,
skin or kidneys.
Did you know?
That the lungs is a excretory
organ.
