KINDS OF ANGLES
Cross-Curricular Focus: Mathematics
(Retrieved from: www.k12reader.com)
Did you know that angles are measured with
circles? An angle is a slice of a circle. Look at
the two rays that are the arms of an angle.
They come to a point where their endpoints
meet. You can almost see it as a slice of pie.
The whole pie, a full circle, has 360°. If we
cut the circle up into 360 equal parts, each
part would be one degree. We measure angles
by how many of those tiny parts, or degrees,
fit between the two arms of the angle.
If an angle has exactly 90° it is called a right
angle. Two perpendicular lines form a right angle. A
right angle has a perfectly square corner, like we
see on a square or a rectangle. If the angle has
less than 90° it is called an acute angle. All acute
angles are smaller than right angles. An acute angle
fits inside the arms of a right angle if you placed
the angles on top of each other. If the angle has
more than 90° it is called an obtuse angle. All
obtuse angles are bigger than right angles. A right
angle could fit inside the arm of an obtuse angle.
Did you know that even a straight
line is an angle? It’s called a straight
angle. It measures 180°, exactly half
of a circle. An angle that is so large
that it bends past the straight line,
but is still smaller than a full circle,
is called reflex angle. It’s really fun
to work with angles!

TIME TO THINK
Answer the questions about the text that you
have listened to on the succeeding slides.
1. What is the
paragraph all
about?
2. What shape
helps us measures
angles?
3. What unit do
we use to measure
angles?
4. What kind of
angles are part of
squares and
rectangles?
5. What is the
difference between
an acute angle and
an obtuse angle?
6. According to the
text, is a straight line
considered an angle?
If YES, what kind of
angle is it?
7. What do you think
is the reason/
objective of the
author in writing the
text?
15

LEARNING POINT
Listen attentively as the teacher discusses the
lesson for today.
16

Authors write for

many different
reasons or purposes.
A text that
17

presents a lot of
facts is written to
give information.
A text that presents a
18

lot of opinions is written

to get you believe in or
do something. It is
trying to persuade you.
Sometimes many of the
19

different texts you read

are written just for fun
because authors just
want to entertain you.
20

Determining the purpose

of the author or speaker
is as simple as PIE
(Persuade, Inform, Entertain)
21

PERSUADE
- gives reasons to convince
readers or listeners;
influences the way readers
or listeners think
INFORM
22

- gives facts to the

readers or listeners;
explains the details of
things or events
23

ENTERTAIN
- brighten one’s mood or
feelings; usually deals with
imaginary subjects; keeps
readers or listeners amused
Persuade
24

Inform
Entertain
25

TIME TO WORK OUT

Classify each of the following text titles
according to the possible purpose of the
author in writing each.
26

“The Book of
Knowledge”
27

“Why It’s More

Fun in the
Philippines”
28

“The Amazing
Adventures of
Squirmy the Worm”
29

“Katas Papaya Soap

for a Whiter and
Smoother Skin”
30

“The Life Story of

Dr. Jose P. Rizal”
31

“Harry Potter and

the Order of the
Phoenix”
32

“Why Books are

still Better than the
Internet”
33

“Origami: The Art

of Paper Folding”
34

“How the Ants

Finally Won the
War”
35

TIME TO THINK BEYOND

(Group Work)
36

The teacher will divide the class

into 6 groups.
Each group will be given a
selection/ text to read.
37

A member from each group must read

aloud (loud enough for the other
members to hear) the content of the text
given to their group.
38

As a team, the members of each

group must be able to infer the
author’s purpose in writing the text
given to them.
39

After 10
minutes……
40

All the members of each

group will proceed in front.
41

A member from each group will read the

content of the text given to their group so
the other pupils will also have the idea
about the content of the text.
42

In unison, all the members must be

able to present creatively the author’s
purpose in writing the text.
For Group 1 and 4:
A dog is definitely the best pet a child could have.
Would you like to know why? Well, for one, a dog can
be trained to do tricks, which is almost impossible
with a cat because all it does is to stare at you
whenever you ask it to do something. A fish can
make an interesting pet but you can’t play with it
like you can with a dog. Besides, a dog is the most
loyal pet. A rabbit might be cute but have you ever
seen a rabbit that protects his master like a dog
does? So, if you ever plan on getting a pet, go for a
dog and you won’t regret it.
For Group 2 and 5:
Agapito Flores is a Filipino who is known for having
invented the fluorescent lamp. Born in Guiguinto,
Bulacan on September 28, 1897, Agapito Flores
belonged to a poor family and was unable to finish his
high school education. He worked at a machine shop at
an early age and later saved up enough money to enrol
himself in a vocational school where he took up
electronics. Then, he worked as an electrician. During
his vacant time, he worked on his projects about
artificial day lighting. His home experiments led to the
invention of what is today known as the fluorescent
lamp, which was named in his honor.
For Group 3 and 6:
A Lion lay asleep in the forest, his great head
resting on his paws. A timid little Mouse came
upon him unexpectedly, and in her fright and
haste to get away, ran across the Lion’s nose.
Roused from his nap, the Lion laid his huge paw
angrily on the tiny creature to kill her. “Spare
me!” begged the poor Mouse. “Please let me go
and someday I will surely repay you.” The Lion
was much amused to think that a Mouse could
ever help him.
But he was generous and finally let the Mouse go.
Some days later, while stalking his prey in the
forest, the Lion was caught in the toils of a hunter’s
net. Unable to free himself, he filled the forest
with his angry roaring. The Mouse knew the voice
and quickly found the Lion struggling in the net.
Running to one of the great ropes that bound him,
she gnawed it until it parted, and soon the Lion was
free. “You laughed when I said I would repay you,”
said the Mouse. “Now you see that even a Mouse can
help a Lion.”
From the three mentioned
different text-types
according to purpose, which
one is the best for you to
read? Why?
How do we determine/
infer the purpose of the
speaker/ author in
writing a text/ selection?
49

TIME TO CHECK YOUR SKILLS

(Individual Work)
50

Determine whether the author’s

purpose for each of the following
texts on the succeeding slides is
to PERSUADE, INFORM, or
ENTERTAIN.
51

1. Katas Aloe Vera shampoo will make

your hair smoother in just two weeks.
It is made up from pure Aloe Vera
extracts combined with special
ingredients guaranteed to provide
visible results instantly. It is really
the best option to have a great hair
day.
2. Many people around the world prefer to use
52

the fluorescent lamp instead of the incandescent

lamp. The main reason for this is that, light
produced by the fluorescent lamp has a
brightness that can be compared to daylight. It
is so much better than the incandescent lamp
because it helps us save electricity. What’s
more is that the fluorescent lamp does not heat
as much and as fast as the incandescent lamp.
The fluorescent lamp is truly so much better
than the incandescent lamp.
3. Sam the snowman was feeling sad and
53

lonely. But you will never be able tell from

the way he looks. For Sam is a very
proper little snowman. He always looks
smart standing by the snow-covered grass
wearing his black hat, a pretty-looking
tie, and a constant wide smile. No one
knew how lonely Sam was, except the
Snow Fairy who secretly watches over him
from behind the giant clouds.
4. Diabetes is a serious disease that affects all
54

people, regardless of age, gender, or race.

Signs and symptoms of diabetes include being
unusually thirsty, drinking large amounts of
liquids without quenching your thirst, frequent
urination, fruity smelling urine, dry skin, and
blurred vision. To prevent diabetes, it is
necessary to eat a well-balanced diet and get
plenty of exercise. It is easier to prevent
diabetes than it is to treat it once it has
developed.
5. Why do cat lick themselves? You must have
55

seen your pet cat lick the insides of his paw, rub
it around his nose, lick it again, and rub it around
his ears, forehead, and eyes. Once he’s done with
the left and right sides of his face, he then uses
his rough tongue to lick his legs, shoulders, tail,
and the rest of his body. Yes, cats use licking as
a way to clean their bodies. This is called
grooming. Cats do these cleaning steps for most
parts of the day, every day, to get rid of
parasites; keep their coats clean, smooth, and
waterproof; and to cool down on a hot day.
56

TIME TO CHALLENGE YOURSELF

(Assignment)
Write PERSUADE, INFORM,
or ENTERTAIN on the blank
provided before each item to
tell the purpose of the
following.
______1. A chapter in a Science book
explaining why and how volcanoes erupt
______2. A story about a toy who turned into a
real boy for a day
______3. A feature article telling about reasons
why one must visit Batanes Group of Islands
______4. Directions for making leche flan
______5. A manual on how to operate a
personal computer
