(By Manufacturer’s catalogue)

What is a belt drive and where is it used ?
• Belts are used to transmit power between two shafts by
means of friction
• They are called as flexible drive

• In flexible drive, the rotary motion is converted into linear

motion of belt and again into rotary motion of driven
shaft
• Belt drive is a non-positive drive and hence it limits the
power to be transmitted.
Advantages

• Simple
• Parallel shafts are not required
• Noise and vibrations are damped out.
• They are lubrication free. Require only low maintenance.
• Highly efficient. Some misalignment is tolerable.
• Very economical if the shafts are separated by large
distance.
Disadvantages

• Heat buildup occurs. Speed is limited to 35m/s.

• Power transmitted is limited to 370kW
• Operating temperatures are usually restricted to – 35
to 85°C
• Some adjustment of center distance is necessary for
wear and stretch compensation
Types of Belts
Belt Drive selection Criteria

Following information is required

1. Power to be transmitted
2. The input and output speeds
3. The center distance
4. Type of load
Steps For selection of belt
• Determine the load correction factor Fa from the table

• Selection of c/s of belt

• Calculate the length of belt

• Exact center distance

• Calculate the angle of wrap for smaller pulley

• Calculate the corrected power
• Calculate the corrected power rating

• Calculate the No. of Belts

Case Study : Selection of Belt drive of a low
power air compressor

Specifications :
• Power = 0.5 kW
• Motor speed = 1420 rpm
• Compressor speed= 650 rpm
• Center distance (C) = 400 mm
Step 1 : Select load correction factor based on
application

• Fa = 1.2 (for light duty motor and steady load)

Step 2 : Calculate Design Power

• Pd = P * Fa = 0.6 kW
Step 3 : Select type of V- belt

• Power = 600 / 746 =0.88042 Hp

Type A belt is selected
Step 4 : Selection of
Standard pulley
• d = 125 mm , for A type
• D = (1420 /50)*d
• D = 273.07 mm
• The next standard size
pulley is 280 mm
• D = 280 mm
Step 5 : Calculate the
pitch length of belt
•
• C = 400
• L =1436.26 mm

• The corrected pitch length

is 1430 mm
Step 6: calculate the
correct center distance
& Fd

we get C = 389.19 mm

α=π–2
α = 157°
From table, Fd = 0.94
Step 8 : calculate power rating of selected
bearing

For 1420rpm ,
125mm
pulley dia and
2.21 speed
ratio

Pr = 2.19 +
0.17
Pr = 2.36 kW
Step 9 : find the belt
correction factor

• Fc = 0.96
Step 10: calculate modified power rating

• Fd
  = 0.94 , Fc = 0.96

• = 2.12 kW

Step 11: calculate modified power rating

= 0.2830

Hence, 1 belt is sufficient for power transmission
