Guelph Permeameter
A debris-free bore hole of uniform geometry is to auger to a desired depth
and the smear layer is to be removed by well prepared on brush if any.

The instrument is to be assembled and maintained on a tripod

Water is to be filled in the reservoir after remaining the fill plug and the
reservoir value is set to the proper position.

The tripod stand is placed centered area the hole, and is to be slowly
lowered so that the support tubes enters in to the auger holes. Flexible
tripod is to be adjusted as per land slope.

The air inlet tip is slowly raised for 1st height(H) i.e sum the experiment
gets started.

The rate of fall of water in the reservoir is observed and noted. The rate of
fall of water indicates outflow of water from the reservoir into the soil.

Readings are taken at regular intervals, intervals adjusted to field

condition.

When 3 to 4 consecutive readings of a reservoir are found to be same i.e a

steady state or quasi steady state is attained, the observations are
terminated.

Finally, the soil matrix flux potential and hydraulic conductivity are
calculated.

Double Ring Infiltrometer

The rings are installed by driving the rings up to 10 cm depth
into the ground.

Grass was cut off up to soil surface, if found at any site and soil
surface was protected against the disturbance created during at
water in to the ring.

For this purpose, a polythene sheet was placed at the bottom of

the ring and water was poured on this sheet was carefully
removed without causing any impact on the soil surface.

The rate of fall of water was measured in the inner ring while a
part of water maintained at approximately the same level in the
outer ring to reduce the divergence of the flow in to the soil due
to unsaturated lateral flow, which is the largest source of error
in the ring infiltration tests.

Water depth inside the ring may also cause divergence and
therefore it was kept as minimum as possible during the test.

The depth of water infiltrated into the ground by the float

gauge.

ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY
METER
Collect the soil sample from different places with the help of augur

Then mix the soil sample properly with water and ratio should be
1:2.

Stir the sample for 20-30 minutes, till the sample is dissolved
completely.
.

Then filter the sample with a filter paper and collect the
sample in a beaker.

Switch ON the main supply and press the ON/OFF button

Rinse the electrode with distilled water to remove any impurity.

Shake the electrode or air dry it. To avoid contamination

put the electrode in the same sample which is created.

Switch ON the meter and dip the electrode into the

sample. While dipping the electrode make sure the
water level; is above the upper steel band.
Stir the electrode in the sample so as to make a homogeneous sample

Allow time for the reading to be stabilize. Note the reading in the
display.

AQUAMETER
Connect C1and C2 terminals on Aquameter to C1 and C2 terminals on the
test box by means of cable

Connect V1 and V2 terminals on Aquameter to V1 and V2 terminals on

the test box for 5 ohm position.

Set the range switch to position “100 ohm”.

Set the cycle switch to “1”.

Turn the power ON

The reading displayed on the LCD should be close to 0.5 ohm

Connect V1 and V2 to 0.1 ohm position on the test box. Set the range
switch to 1ohm position.
The reading displayed on the LCD should be close to 0.1 ohm

WATER LEVEL INDICATOR

Lower the probe down the borehole until the audio (buzzer) and visual
(light) indicators from the reel signify the presence of water

Raise the probe until the audio and visual indicators stop

Slowly re-lower the probe until the audio and visual indicators are clear
and distinct

Record the depth at the top of the borehole using the graduated
measuring tape

When all readings have been completed, clean the probe and tape
before re-winding the tape back onto the reel
