Symmetrical and unsymmetrical 2-phase Induction Machine

The analysis of 2-phase induction machine is same as the 3-phase

induction machine except small changes in 3-phase machine.
The symmetrical and unsymmetrical 2-phase induction machines
are generally used in 1-phase applications such as refrigerators,
washing machines, clothes dryers, furnace fans, garbage
dispoals,and air conditioners.
In case of symmetrical 2-phase machine a capacitor is connected
in series with one of the stator winding to shift the phase of one
stator current relative to other, thereby producing an average
starting torque.
In case of unsymmetrical 2-phase machine, a starting is produced
by designing the starter windings to be electrically different, in some
cases ,placing a capacitor in series with one of the winding.
Analysis of symmetrical 2-phase induction Machine
 The analysis of 2-phase induction is similar to the 3-phase Induction
Machine.
 Voltage and torque equations in arbitrary reference frame variable:
 The stator 2-phase voltage is converted into the qd Transformation to
arbitrary reference variable.
 The general transformation is : -----(1)
where:
 The transformation matrix and its inverse are equal; that is,

 Transformation of the 2-phase variables of the rotor circuits to

the arbitrary reference frame is;

 Where

 The voltage equations for 2-phase induction machine similar to

the 3-phase induction except some modification.
 In 2-phase only (qs,qr,ds,sr variables exist,0s,0r should be
ignored).,in the case of 3-pahse machine, LM=3/2Lms (XM =3/2
Xms) ;for the 2-phase ,LM(XM) should be replaced by Lms(Xms).
 The torque equation becomes for 2-phase machine is

 Balances Steady-State Operation:

 The equivalent circuit for balanced steady-state operation of a3-
phase symmetrical induction machine is may be used for a2-
phase symmetrical machine if XM is replaced with Xms.
 The 2-phase symmetrical steady-state electromagnetic torque is
given by
