AND HUMAN HEALTH

WHAT IS INFORMATION
TECHNOLOGY?
• Information technology (IT) is the application of computers to
store, retrieve, transmit and manipulate data or information,
often in the context of a business or other enterprise. IT is
considered to be a subset of information and communication
technology (ICT)
• The term is commonly used as a synonym for computers and
computer networks, but it also encompasses
other information's distribution technologies such as television
and telephones
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN INDIA
• IT is the second major industrial sector in India
• It is also the most developing industry
• India is amongst the biggest IT capitals in the
modern world
• Bangalore, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Chennai,
Trivandurm, Noida, Mumbai and Pune contribute
to 90% of all the IT sector in the country.
ROLE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
IN ENVIRONMENT SYSTEM
(a) National Management Information System (NMIS):
NMIS of the Department of Science and Technology has
compiled a database on Research and Development Projects
along with information about research scientists and personnel
involved.
(b) Environmental Information System (ENVIS):
The Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India
has created an information System called Environmental
Information System (ENVIS). With its headquarters in Delhi, it
functions in 25 different centres all over the country.
(c) Remote Sensing and Geographical Information System
(GIS):
Satellite imageries provide us actual information about various
physical and biological resources and also to some extent about
their state of degradation in a digital form through remote
sensing.

(d) Geographical Information System (GIS):

GIS has proved to be a very effective tool in environmental
management. GIS is a technique of superimposing various
thematic maps using digital data on a large number of inter-
related or inter dependent aspects.
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND
HUMAN HEALTH
• Electronic Health Information Sources: . Recently, a new graphical interface
to the internet, known as World Wide Web has made it possible to rapidly
retrieve, arrange and display on web pages the contents of files on health
information rather than just their names and for users to transfer from resource
to resource along a virtually endless web of hyperlinks with the click of a
mouse button.

• Bringing Health care online: Health care contains information about

Medicare and Medicaid and various related web sites guide consumers to a
wide variety of health information available through agencies, including the full
text of clinical practice guidelines, quick-reference guides for clinicians and
consumer brochures developed with the support of the Agency for Health Care
Policy and Research.
• Telemedicine: It is being used for consultations between rural and
urban practitioners. Though private hospitals and institutions are quick
in adoption, it is interesting & appreciable to note that the government
has also made major efforts in this direction

• Health management research institute (HMRI):

Other computer systems SICEL, INAN AND SIOM track the CD4
counts of HIV Positive individuals, new HIV CASES, and AIDS death
rates, respectively. These computer systems help in reporting new
HIV cases, and identifying geographical areas, where HIV prevalence
may be rising, so that necessary action may be taken speedily.
CONCLUSION
• The rapid growth in IT and the highly
qualified man power in India are bound to
have a positive impact on the earth’s
environment and health care among others.
• With the help of IT, we are able to note
down the ongoing changes or we can predict
things that are to happen in near future.
