Types of Needles
IV Fluids
Common IV Fluid Use Contraindications
Isotonic Saline (0.9%) Replaces Na loss from GI loss or CHF, Pulmonary Edema, renal
burns impairment
Isotonic 5% Dextrose in water Maintain fluid intake, provide No typical contraindications. Add
D-5-W Hypotonic 10%Dextrose calorie needs, doesn’t replace insulin for DM patients
D-10-W electrolyte deficiencies
Isotonic 5% Dextrose in 0.3% NaCl Supplies calories for nutritional No typical contraindications. Add
needs insulin for DM patients
Hypotonic 5% Dextrose in 0.9% Maintains fluid intake, is No typical contraindications. Add
NaCl maintenance FOC if no insulin for DM patients
electrolytes needed
Isotonic Ringers Solution Has similar electrolytes as plasma,
correct metabolic acidosis,
replace fluid losses from diarrhea
snd burns
IV Fluids
Hypertonic Solutions replace electrolytes, should be given slowly and monitor for circulatory
overload
Lactated Solutions- Ringer’s solutions are isotonic and are used for rehydration and body fluid
deficits. Doesn’t contain sufficient K or Ca to replace those losses. Always check medication
compatibility prior to administering with Ringer’s solutions.
Plasma-Lyte-M and Plasma-Lyte R- provide electrolyte replacement
Devices for Regulation of IV
Administration
IV Push- given by syringe at the IV port. Gives a rapid dose of medication timed over 2-5 minutes
IVPB- an intermittent infusion that uses a secondary line
IV medications injected into a volume control chamber. They are diluted with the running IV
fluid
Electronic IV Pump- precisely measure the flow rate and regulate that flow rate over a period of
time
Clamp on the IV tubing
Supplies for Protection of Infusion Site
Sterile gauze dressing. Does not allow for visible site inspection
Semipermeable membrane. Transparent (Tegaderm)
Tape
