What is Potential energy?

 potential energy is the energy held by an object because of its

position relative to other objects, stresses within itself, its electric
charge, or other factors
The formula of potential energy

 The formula for potential energy depends on the force acting on the two objects.
For the gravitational force the formula is P.E. = mgh, where m is the mass in
kilograms, g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m / s2 at the surface of the
earth) and h is the height in meters.
Example of potential energy

 A stretched elastic string in a longbow. When the elastic

string is released, it will cause the arrow to shoot forward.
Two main types of potential energy
Elastic potential energy
Gravitational potential energy
 Gravitational potential energy is energy in an  Elastic potential energy is energy stored in
object that is held in a vertical position, due to objects that can be stretched or compressed,
the force of gravity working to pull it down. such as trampolines, rubber bands and bungee
cords.
