    WHAT IS ANEMIA?

     Anemia is decrease in the level of Haemoglobin in blood below


    the reference level for the age and sex of individuals.
     Or
     Anemia is defined as a state in which Haemoglobin
    concentration or red cell volume is below the mean for age and
    sex.
     Actually anemia is not the disease but is a symptom of other
    disorders.
    GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

    • Patient may be asymptomatic

     Non specific symptoms include : Fatigue, headache, breathlessness,


    Palpitations, Tachycardia, Systolic flow murmur, cardiac
    failure,Glossitis,Angular cheilosis

     Specific symptoms : Koilonychia in Iron deficiency anemia, jaundice in


    haemolytic anemia, bone deformities in thalassemia.

     Anemia is classified on the basis of MCV

    LAB. INVESTIGATION OF ANEMIA
     CBC and RBC morphology
     Peripheral blood film
     ESR
     Bone marrow exam.(only when indicated)
     Urine RE , Stool RE
     Upper GI Endoscopy
     Hemoglobin electrophoresis
    MANAGEMENT

    Care Objectives
     Determine the Cause of anemia
     The etiology is often multifactorial; even when there is an obvious cause, investigation of
    serious underlying causes (e.g.cancer in adults) is recommended.
     Aim of Treatment
     Individualize disease-specific management depending on underlying cause.
     Lifestyle Management
    It is recommended that patients with anemia should change the lifestyle to replenish the
    deficiencies e.g in iron deficiency anemia (iron ) , Vitamin B-12 , Folic acid
    TREATMENT

     Best treatment is to treat underlying cause of anemia..
