PHYSICAL SELF

 HEREDITY AND ENVIRONMENT

 DEFINITION
 DEFINITION ACCORDING TO
PSYCHOLOGIST
 DEFINITION ACCORDING TO EASTERN
TRADITION
 DEFINITION ACCORDING TO BUDDHISM
Factors in the Development of Physical Self :

Two Interacting Forces:

Heredity (nature). It is the transmission of
traits or characteristics from parents to
offspring.
Environment (nurture). It is the sum total
of all the forces or experience that a person
undergoes from conception to old age.
Definition:

Physical Self refers to the body, this marvelous

container and complex, finely tuned, machine with
which we interface with our environment and fellow
beings.
The Beginning of Life :

Human reproductive system, organ system by

which humans reproduce and bear live offspring.

The female reproductive system has

two functions: The first is to produce egg cells, and
the second is to protect and nourish the offspring
until birth.

The male reproductive system has one function,

and it is to produce and deposit sperm.

The Beginning of Life :

 Life begins at fertilization refers to the meeting of

female sex cell (ova) and male sex cell
(spermatozoa).
 The zygote is known as the fertilized egg cell which
contains all the hereditary potentials from the parents.
 The gestation period continues to grow of about 280
days or 40 weeks or 9 calendar months.
 A male parent may pass either X or Y chromosomes.
 Female always give X chromosomes.
The Beginning of Life:

Both male and female chromosomes contains several

thousand of genes, small particles in a string like formation.
Within the genes is the substance called DNA or
Deoxyribonucleic Acid which is the code of heredity.

"Man is a
transitional
being? This
body is a
bridge." (Sri
Arubindo).

PHYSICAL SELF
DEFINITION ACCORDING TO
PSYCHOLOGIST:
WILLIAM JAMES CONSIDERED BODY AS THE INITIAL SOURCE
OF SENSATION AND NECESSARY FOR THE ORIGIN AND
MAINTENANCE OF PERSONALITY.

SIGMUND FREUD'S CONSTRUCTION OF SELF AND

PERSONALITY MAKES THE PHYSICAL BODY THE CORE OF
HUMAN EXPERIENCE. FREUD WAS OF THE VIEW THAT THE
EGO IS FIRST AND FOREMOST A BODY EGO (FREUD, 1937).

FOR ERIK ERIKSON, EXPERIENCE IS ANCHORED IN THE

GROUND-PLAN OF BODY (ERIKSON, 1963). ACCORDING TO
HIM THE ROLE OF BODILY ORGANS IS ESPECIALLY
IMPORTANT IN EARLY DEVELOPMENTAL STAGES OF A
PERSONS LIFE.
ACCORDING TO PSYCHOLOGIST:

Carl Gustav Jung argued that physical processes

are relevant to us only to the extent they are
represented in the psyche. The physical body and the
external world can be known only as psychological
experiences.
B. F. Skinner was a staunch behaviorist and for
him the role of body is of primary importance. For
Skinner the terms personality and self are mere
explanatory fictions and all there is, is the body.
