WIND

ENERGY

Vineet Kumar
Asst. Professor
EEE Department
D.I.E.T Rishikesh
Introduction

When wind strikes an object, it exerts a

force in an attempt to it out of the way.
Some of the wind's energy is used to
produce the energy,in this case
windmill is used to convert this force
into energy.
How Wind is converted into
electricity?
• Wind turbines convert the kinetic
energy in the wind into Mechanical
power.
• This mechanical power can be used for
specific tasks(such as grinding grain
and pumping water) or a generator can
convert this energy into electricity.
• The wind turns the blades , which spin
the shaft which is connected to a
generator which makes Electric power.
Wind Energy conversion
system
Main Elements of Wind Energy
System

• Wind Turbine

• Mechanical subsystem
• Electrical generator

• Controller

• Supporting structure
Wind Turbine

It converts Wind energy into mechanical

Power.
Important parts of Wind turbine are:-
1) Rotor - Horizontal axis rotor.

Vertical axis rotor.

2) Wind Mill Head
Wind Turbine
Mechanical subsystem
It consist of two main parts :-
a) Transmission unit - It is used to improve the speed
of turbines. Transmission unit has subparts like
chain,gear,belt.
b) Coupling - Two rotating machine shafts must be
tightly coupled together for increasing turbine speed.
*Normally wind turbine rotates @50rpm but with the
help of transmission system it increases upto
1800rpm.
Electric Generator

It converts mechanical energy into electrical

energy.
It is mainly of two types :-

a) Constant speed generator - It moves with

constant speed.

b) Variable speed generator - It moves with

variable speed and frequency keeps on
changing.
Controller
Controller is used to control the speed.Speed
control helps in in control other operating
parameters.
Controlling process is as follows :-
a) to change the direction of rotor according to
wind's direction.
b) to control generator's output.
c) to provide safety to generator.
d) to switch off the system in abnormal
condition.
e) to START & STOP the system.
Supporting structure
It is the important part which provides support
to the Wind Mill.
It is of following types :-

a) Pole type structure

b) Reinforced cement concrete structure

c) Truss structure

d) Built up shell tube structure

Advantages of Wind
Energy
• Renewable source of energy.

• Pollution less energy.

• Free of cost.

• Also one of the reason for rainfall.

• Not harmful for the environment.

Disadvantages of Wind
Energy
• It can't be received indoor.

• Wind energy can't be stored.

• Open space is required.

• Speed and direction can't be stable.

• Efficiency of machinery is less.
• Machinery is costly and heavy.
Applications of Wind
Energy
• The wind energy is used to propel the sailboats in
river and seas to transport men and materials from
one place to another.
• Wind energy is used to run pumps to draw water
from the grounds through wind mills.
• Wind energy has also been used to run flourmills
to grind the grains like wheat and corn into flour.
• Now-a-days wind energy is being used to generate
electricity.
