    Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is important for eliminating cancerous, virus-infected, excess, and damaged cells from the body. It also plays a role in development and tissue shedding. There are intrinsic and extrinsic pathways for apoptosis - the intrinsic pathway involves the mitochondria and formation of the apoptosome, while the extrinsic pathway acts through death receptors and overlaps with the intrinsic pathway through proteins like bid and tbid activating bax and bak. Caspase 3 is involved in carrying out apoptosis in both pathways.

    IMPORTANCE OF APOPTOSIS

    ➔ Eliminates cancerous cells

    ➔ Eliminates virus- infected cells

    ➔ Eliminates excess plasma cells

    ➔ Eliminates redundant and damaged cells


    ➔ Development of fingers and toes in the

    foetus

    Loss of endometrial tissue during menstruation

    + cells lost forming the uterine lining.


    INTRINSIC

    ● “Mitochondrial Pathway”

    ● Forms the apoptotic complex/ apoptosome

    ● Origination in relation to the name


    EXTRINSIC

    ➔ Overlaps with Intrinsic pathway- in bid and


    tbid to bax/bak
