    St. Thomas Aquinas conceived of natural law as general principles implanted in human nature by God, which human reason can apprehend. The first principle of natural law is that good should be done and pursued, and evil avoided. Aquinas believed that while humans have a tendency toward sin, natural law still influences humanity and provides the proper basis for political authority and government.
