DOORDARSHAN: AN
INTRODUCTION
 Indian public service broadcaster, a division of Prasar
Bharati.
 Up until 1975, only seven Indian cities had a television
service.
 Finally, in 1982, Doordarshan as a National Broadcaster
came into existence.
 Presently, Doordarshan operates 21 channels – two All India
channels - DD National and DD News, 11 Regional
language Satellite Channels (RLSC), four State Networks
(SN), an International channel, a Sports Channel DD
Sports and two channels Rajya Sabha TV & DD-Lok
Sabha for live broadcast of parliamentary proceedings.
 Lucknow Doordarshan started functioning on 27th Nov.
1975.
 UP Regional Service telecast with uplinking facility from
studio (DDK, Lucknow) started in January 1998 on INSAT-
2B.
BASICS OF TV BROADCASTING USING
SATELLITE

A TV broadcasting system includes following:

1. STUDIO
2. EARTH STATION
3. TRANSMITTER
STUDIO
 A TV studio is an acoustically
treated compact room.
 It is suitably furnished and
equipped with flood lights for
proper light effects.
 Several cameras are used to
telecast the scene from different
angles.
 The camera and microphone
outputs are fed into the control
room by coaxial cables.
 The control room has several
monitors to view pictures
picked up by different cameras.

WAVEFORM MONITOR
 A waveform monitor is a special type
of oscilloscope used in television
applications.

 It is typically used to measure and

display the level, or voltage, of a video
signal with respect to time.
TV TRANSMITTER FOR DD
NATIONAL
 The transmitter is a wideband transmitter
operating in the VHF range (170-250 MHz).
 Main transmitter components are transmitter
rack with power distribution, exciter, and
power splitter, AF amplifier with power
supply, power coupler, audio combiner &
cooling system.
CAMERA
VIDEO SIGNAL GENERATION
 Active waveform comprises
of 2 signals:
 Luminance (Y)-black and
white Chrominance (C)-
color signal

 Y is obtained by mixing R G
& B as per following
equation.

Y=.3R+.59G+.11B

 Instead of transmitting
Y,R,G,B we transmit Y,R-
Y,B-Y . From these values we
can get the value of R,G,B
using simple electronic
circuit.
DIRECT TO HOME SERVICE
 DTH is the digitalized service which provides multiple
channel direct to the subscriber without inter mediator.

 DTH uses satellite and all the reception system at subscriber

home, which include Off-set type Parabolic dish antenna
(60cm), LNBC, IRD.
 DD has obtained four high power transponders on NSS-6
Satellite.
DD has taken up to a pilot project “Ku Band” transmission
satellite earth station for up linking 35 channels TV bouquets
along with 15 channels radio bouquets.
MICROPHONES
Device that converts acoustical energy
into electrical energy.

TYPES OF MICROPHONE
-Condenser microphone
-Electret microphone
-Dynamic microphone
-Ribbon microphone
-Piezoelectric microphone
-Laser microphone
-Fiber Optic microphone
-Cordless microphone

HD BROADCAST

 High-definition television (or HDTV, or HD)

refers to video having resolution substantially
higher than traditional television systems
(standard-definition TV, or SDTV, or SD). HD
has one or two million pixels per frame, roughly
five times that of SD.
 Early HDTV broadcasting used analog
techniques, but today HDTV is digitally
broadcasting video compression.
OB VAN
Outside broadcasting is the production of television or radio programmes
(typically to cover news and sports events) from a mobile television studio. This
mobile control room is known as an "Outside Broadcasting Van", "OB Van",
"mobile unit". Signals from cameras and microphones come into the OB Van
for processing and transmission
OB VAN

• A typical OB Van is usually divided into 4 parts.

• The first and largest part is the production area or sitting
area for all directors & producers.
• The second part of a van is for the audio engineer.
• The 3rd part of the van is video tape
• The 4th part is transmission where the signal is
monitored by and engineered for quality control
purposes and is transmitted.
