Michigan has a republican form of government with three branches of government: an executive branch consisting of the
Governor of Michigan and other constitutional officials who are elected independently; the legislative branch consisting of
the DPR and Senate; and a judicial branch consisting of a justice court. The state also allows direct participation of voters
through initiatives, referendums, withdrawals and ratifications.

West: Ohio Michigan consists of two peninsulas separated by the
Straits of Mackinac. The 45th parallel north runs
East: Canada
through the state—marked by highway signs and the
South: Illinois Polar-Equator Trail along a line including
North: Wisconsin Mission Point Light near Traverse City, the towns of
Gaylord and Alpena in the Lower Peninsula and
Menominee in the Upper Peninsula. With the exception
of two tiny areas drained by the Mississippi River by
way of the Wisconsin River in the Upper Peninsula and
by way of the Kankakee-Illinois River in the Lower
Peninsula, Michigan is drained by the Great Lakes-
St. Lawrence.
