Basics of ArcGIS Enterprise

A Technical Overview
What is ArcGIS Enterprise?

• The new name for the ArcGIS for Server product line
• How you get Esri server technology
• How you deploy Web GIS in your infrastructure
Why do you need ArcGIS Enterprise?

• New server capabilities, such as GeoAnalytics and the raster analysis capability of
Image Server, will only work if you have deployed Web GIS via ArcGIS Enterprise.
• New apps such as Drone to Map and Insights require Web GIS via ArcGIS Enterprise
in order to run.
• Participation in distributed Web GIS collaborations at 10.5 requires ArcGIS
Enterprise.

Deploying Server Roles in ArcGIS Enterprise

• All server roles are part of ArcGIS Enterprise; they cannot be purchased stand-
alone and many require Web GIS integration in order to function successfully.

• However, you can apply more than one server role to a single machine.

• As a best practice server roles that carry out analysis of high volume or high
velocity data, such as GeoAnalytics or GeoEvent, should not be combined with
another server role and should always have their own dedicated site.
Understanding Roles in ArcGIS Enterprise

A role determines what capabilities are available. There are 2 places you will find the term “role” used in ArcGIS
Enterprise: Server Roles and User Roles. You set a server role through licensing. You set a user role through
granting privileges in Portal for ArcGIS.

Server Roles: User Roles:

• GIS Server • Viewer
• Image Server • User
• GeoEvent Server • Publisher
• GeoAnalytics Server • Administrator
• Business Analyst Server • Custom Role
Deploying ArcGIS Enterprise

• Start with the base ArcGIS Enterprise deployment; this is how you get Web GIS in
your infrastructure.

• Once you have your base ArcGIS Enterprise deployment configured you can move
on to adding additional server sites to federate with your base deployment.
Single Machine Base Deployment

Machine 1 On one machine you will have:

Web Server with

Steps for a Single Machine Base Deployment

• All of the software components of ArcGIS Enterprise are installed and configured
on a single physical or virtual machine.

Step 1:
• Verify install prerequisites are met.
• Configure security certificates.

Step 2:
• Install Portal for ArcGIS
- Through the installation process set up the
content store

Step 3:
• Configure your Web Adaptor for Portal

Step 4:
• Install ArcGIS Server
- Through the installation process set up the
server directories and config store
- Apply the correct server licensing role
during the software authorization portion
of install

Step 5:

Step 6:
• Install ArcGIS Data Store
- Create a Relational Data Store
Steps for a Single Machine Base Deployment (cont.)

• All of the software components of ArcGIS Enterprise are installed and configured
on a single physical or virtual machine.

Step 7:
+ • In your ArcGIS Server site, set the Data
Store as your managed database

Step 8:
• Federate your ArcGIS Server site with
Portal for ArcGIS

Step 9:
• In your Portal for ArcGIS settings
designate your ArcGIS Server as the
hosting server
Multitier Base Deployment

• You can also isolate the components of the base ArcGIS Enterprise deployment by
installing them across multiple machines.

• You can use as few as 2 machines or as many as 5 for a multitier base deployment
before you start getting into High Availability Base Deployments.
High Availability Base Deployments

• High availability is an option for all deployment configurations of ArcGIS Enterprise.

ArcGIS Enterprise and Web GIS

• The Portal for ArcGIS component of ArcGIS Enterprise is code-free by default, but
this does not mean you cannot use code to script, automate, expand or customize
your Web GIS.
ArcGIS Enterprise and Distributed Web GIS Collaborations

• Distributed Web GIS is how you can share content across multiple Web GIS
deployments through what’s known as a Collaboration.

• The flow of shared content can be unilateral or bidirectional.

• Content sharing can be automatic (as soon as a shared item is updated) or

scheduled.

• Whichever Portal initiates the collaboration is considered the host.
