Business 9 – Unit 4 – “Success”

We use prefixes to modify the meaning of an adjective.


Some of the most common prefixes are:

anti- = against over- = too much


bi- = two post- = after
dis- = the opposite of pre- = before
in- = not pro- = in favour of
inter- = between semi- = half
mal- = badly sub- = under, below
mis- = wrongly/badly un- = not
out- = beyond, outside under- = not enough
The following suffixes also help form adjectives:

-able = can be adjustable, believable


-al economical, historical
-ful cheerful, hopeful
-ic electric, symphonic
-ish = quite, not very tallish, reddish
-ive impressive, responsive
-less = without cordless, fearless
-ous humorous, luxurious
-y Misty, handy, pricey
Undervalue, underage, undercover.
Coexist, co-pilot, coeducation.
Overeat, overcook, overtime.
Misbehave, misunderstand.
Outdo, outgrow.
Ultra-light, ultrasound.
Ex-wife, ex-boyfriend.
Decommission, deindustrialization, devalue.
