TOPIC: INTRODUCTION
 DEFINITION OF KEY TERMS

• Destination- is the place where a journey finally ends

• Socio-cultural-a way of life by the group of people, their
norms, values, behaviours etc, that they accept.
• Island destination-landmass surrounded by ocean water

Types of destinations
• Urban destination
• Rural destination
• Coastal destination
• Island destination
 URBAN destination---are places usually associated with
high population densities and they are areas of
infrastructure development and good road and theme
parksnetworks.Therefore, tourists are appealed to such
destinations e.g. Disneyland
 Rural destination---are also known as countryside or
remote areas. Usually comprises low population densities
and untempered natural environs e.g. National parks
 Coastal areas---are either towns or villages that are
located on the coast e.g. Cape Town
 Island destination e.g. Caribbean Islands(Jamaica),
Seychelles, Cape Verde

Tourism develops in several destinations and is influenced by the

following factors:
1. Socio-cultural: tourists usually want to experience what their
communities do not offer for a change e.g. a European tourist
engaging in an African dance.
2. Environmental: natural and man made environments appeal to
different tourists e.g. Eco-tourists usually like to visit areas of natural
beauty e.g. The Amazonia.
3. Economic: areas offering business investments e.g. Well
developed infrastructure, good transport network, accommodation,
exchange rates taxation, may appeal more to tourists.
4. Political: refers to government policies, peace and stability etc tend
to be better tourist destinations
