ABSTRACT
Integral Abutment bridge(IAB) construction method has become a matter emphasized in the term of reference since
2007 by the Bridge Unit, JKR to bridge designer whether the private sector and government. In the integral bridge
design, the assumption made by the designer is this structure will be had as a frame structure. No detailed study has
been done to determine whether the design of the bridge of this type is designed to achieve such behavior. Soil
stiffness is an important parameter which influences the design of bridge abutments and the data relevant to
Malaysian conditions is either not available or compiled in a form that is readily accessible to designers in Malaysia. It
is common practice to used bored piles at abutment. However, many of the theoretical and experimental studies on
IABs have been carried out assuming that the abutments are constructed on steel piles. In this study, performance of
pile-soil structure through the assumptions and parameters of the theory could be validated with the conditions at the
site.

INTRODUCTION PRELIMINARY RESULTS

The designers are relying solely on computer analysis and
parameters derived from reference books to come out
with the design. With the emergence of this study, it is
hoped that the assumptions and parameters of the theory
could be validated with the conditions at the site.

To enable this design is to be used; its designers will put the
common high safety factor. This will indirectly lead to Finite Element Modelling
uneconomic designs which definitely lead to waste of
resource. CONCLUSION
•Work on this project will benefit JKR Design Engineers, Malaysian
consulting engineers and highways authorities involved in the design
and specification of IABs, as it will provide data which is directly
relevant to Malaysian conditions and practices.

•The work should help JKR Engineers and Malaysian engineers to

establish a lead in the use of bored piles for IAB construction and
enable Malaysian consultants to win work in countries where steel is
not normally used because either it is not easily available or expensive
to buy.

•Develop design guidelines for IABs built using bored concrete piles.
Maintenance of bridge with regard to replacing elastomeric bearings
and expansion joints can be reduced as more integral bridge to be
introduced.
