INTRODUCTION

• The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an

examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding
of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science.
• GATE is conducted jointly by the IISc and IITs on behalf of
Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government
of India.
• The GATE score of a candidate reflects the relative performance
level of a candidate.
PURPOSE

• The score is used for admissions to various post-graduate education programs (e.g.
Master of Engineering, Master of Technology, Doctor of Philosophy) in Indian higher
education institutes, with financial assistance provided by MHRD and other
government agencies.
• Recently, GATE scores are also being used by several Indian public sector
undertakings (i.e., government-owned companies) for recruiting graduate engineers in
entry-level positions.
• It is one of the most competitive examinations in India. Based on the success story of
IITs all over the world, GATE is also recognized by various international institutes
such as Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.
3 STEPS

• MATERIAL COLLECTION

• Converting thought into 3-D

• Planning is Key to Success

MATERIAL COLLECTION

• Log Book (Small Notebook): Keep a log of all the

preparation activities which will help you to track
the waste of time and also to help balanced study.
Notes Book (200 Page Long Book): Divide the notebook into two
part, first part can be used to note down, the important notes and
steps etc. also note down important numbers etc. In the second
half part, note down the important formulae.
(Don't use ready formula book. Your own collection of the formulae will walk you through the
formulae which will make easy to remember these formulae). Make sure you use the best
quality notebook and a good pen. My experience taught me that the ART and AMBIENCE
improve your efficiency.
MATERIAL COLLECTION

• Collect GATE BOOK, Syllabus, Questions papers, and Answers

In the market, you will get a GATE book (find out a latest good book), this book will guide you
to remain focused on the GATE syllabus. This book will help you to define the scope of the
study. BUT REMEMBER THAT THIS BOOK WILL NOT HELP YOU TO STUDY.
Next, read the recent question papers available on GATE website or in a market, some
collective question paper book will also be available.
An initial reading of this book will prepare your mind to quench the essence of GATE
questions from your REGULAR UNIVERSITY TEXTBOOKS.
This linking of your University Syllabus with GATE syllabus is the important formula for your
success (Obviously, you should have studied for university exams).
MATERIAL COLLECTION

• Collect All the important books

• Get all the books that you have used for
University exam preparation which will
help you to link with already studied
concepts
(Usually avoid using new books except the concept
which you have already not studied).
• Sometimes you can use your class notes.
However, make sure that errors are avoided.

Converting thought
into 3-D
• Planning is Key to Success
"I am going to qualify
GATE"
is a thought which needs to be converted
into a

"3-D GATE qualified

Score Card”
FIRST-D------- DECIDE
• You have decided to appear for GATE
examination.
• However, by the time you decide to
study, you will realize that you are in
the final year.
• It's important to know that "TO
START EARLY....DECIDE TO START
STUDY FROM THE VERY NEXT
DAY OF YOUR UNIVERSITY
EXAM OF THAT SEMESTER”.
SECOND-D------ DEDICATION
• Once you DECIDE, it's important to show dedication
on your idea. MAKE THAT IDEA, YOUR
LIFE....THINK of IT, DREAM of IT, LIVE on that.
• Work on the prepared plan and keep noting in the
LOGBOOK. This will help you to keep on the
planned track.
• To maintain dedication, avoiding distraction is very
important.
• The main sources of distractions are friends, mobile,
TV, and various social functions.
• Start noting the time wasted on distractions which
will help you to reduce this next day.
THIRD-D ---- DETERMINATION
• Till you get the result, nothing will be more important than
GATE exam.
• How to improve determination?
• The strong determination comes from strong motivation, you
should identify your own motivation to maintain your
determination.
• You should always monitor the motivation level.
• A common method to get motivated are to imagine the change in
your life after qualification of GATE or getting a good score or
getting admission in IISc, IIT, NIT, or getting a job, government
Job or at least improvement in technical knowledge
• MATERIAL COLLECTION
• Converting thought into 3-D

Planning is Key to
Success
• Before you start the study, you have to understand that GATE exam
gives almost equal weight to all subjects.

• Means, for example, some people think that they are good in Maths
and may give less importance to some theory subjects.

• The key to success is to give equal importance to all the subjects.

• Before you start planning count
number days between the "Day you
started to study" and "the tentative date
for examination”
• Usually, for GATE syllabus have about
6-8 sections. Your Plan should have
following Phases and make sure work
strictly as per plan.
PHASE 1: DETAILED STUDY
• Each section should be allotted about 5-10 Days
• In this Phase, you should quickly run through the Syllabus of that section
and kind of questions asked from the GATE Book.
• You should spend maximum 1 day for this exercise.
• Then next four days, you can spend on reading from your regular
University book.
• During this reading, you should note down the important points and
Important formulae.
• REMEMBER that during this 5 days period you should not divert your attention to any other subjects. You
should spend about 10-12 Hours as an effective working hour (without any disturbance) and Make sure you stop
after 5 days on that subject and start the next subject. Another reminder to keep noting in your logbook about
time and what you have studied and where you lost the time. After 5 days, you should note what topics you could
not cover.
PHASE 2
READING QUESTION PAPERS
• After reading all the subjects, visit question papers again
which will help you to understand the kind of questions
asked
• if you could get answers of some questions then you will
get more inspired
• if not…..it will make you to work hard.
PHASE 3: FIRST HALF PERIOD PHASE

• Depending on Number days you have, you can

start more focused study by giving each section 4
or 3 days and following the rule that One section
at a time.
• This time you can start study by starting with the
topics that you missed in PHASE-1.
• This time you can jump upon important pointers.
PHASE 4: READING FORMULAE
(DAILY 6AM-8AM):
• After completing Phase 3, you should daily spend 6am-
8am on reading the formulae.
• You should prepare posters or write on the walls in
easily readable manner.
• You should daily read these formulae without bothering
much about remembering it.
• This should be continued till final GATE examination.
PHASE 5: SECOND HALF PERIOD
PHASE WITH EXAM
• 2-5 Days for each section
• This time give each section only 2 days and
towards the end of these 2 days appear for exam
on only that section.
• Note down the marks and also note down the
difficulty faced by you.
• Use this noting to improve your study in next
cycle.
PHASE 6: 1-DAY FOR EACH SECTION

• After reading one section in one day give exam on that

section.

• Try to implement learning from Phase 5

PHASE 7
1-DAY FOR COMPLETE
SYLLABUS

• Revise complete syllabus in one

day and Appear for a complete
examination and mark the score
and difficulties and use this as for
course correction action.
