in order, we must first cultivate our personal life;
we must first set our hearts right.
What is an Attitude?
 If you want to understand a person’s
behavior, you must understand his or her
values.
 Values are basic convictions (notions)
about what is right and wrong.
What is an Attitude?
 Strong belief about or feeling toward a
person, object, idea, or event.
 Values are the foundation for attitudes.
 Attitudes are the foundation for behavior.
 They are all interrelated.
 Positive vs. negative.
Attitudes are Powerful
 Being positive enables one to see and think
clearly.
 Daily obstacles are opportunities.
 Lemons
 Attitudes are contagious. Is yours worth
catching?

How Attitudes are Formed
 Social Influences: All the interactions w/ and
influences resulting from both formal and
informal group memberships.
 Peer Group: has a strong social influence on
our attitudes and behaviors.
 Receive norms, status, and roles.
How Attitudes are Formed
 Values differ between generations.
 Values differ between regions.
 Values differ between cultures.
Wanted: Infectious Attitudes!
 Evaluations are based on attitudes.
 Employers desire individuals with:
The ability to be self-motivated
(McDonalds)
The ability to accept change
(stubbornness, arrogance, inflexibility)

 Job involvement
 Extent that a person identifies with his job.
 Organizational commitment
 Extent that a person identifies with the
organization. This is a great predictor for
turnover.
 Job satisfaction
A person’s general attitude toward work.
