The Mole
• The mole is the chemists counting unit.
•
Empirical and Molecular formulae
• The simplest whole-number ratio of atoms in a compound is
called the empirical formula.
• We can use moles to find the formula of a substance. The
steps are as follows:
• The ratio of atoms must be the same, since one mole of any
substance contains the same number of units.
• There can’t be less than one atom of any element in the simplest
formula, so divide through by the number of moles which is
smallest.
