Colonialism

Colonialism is the maintenance of political,

social, economic and cultural domination
over people by a foreign power for one
extended period of time.
Basically controlling a country without
annexing them nation.
Colonialism had hit its peak in the
16th and 17th century and major
powers like Portugal and Spain and
latter the British and French had
coloniazed most of Africa which
propelled them to heights of
wealth and power by using the
resource and population of the
African continent.
Neo Colonialism
Is the practice of using capitalism,
business globalization and cultural
imperialism to influence a country,
instead of direct military control
(imperialism) or indirect political
control (hegemony).
Players

• Africa
• China
• Western Nations (Europe &
US)
Situation Analysis
• Sino-Africa relations
When analyzing the continental views on their
relations with China it is a divided plain
containing nations that view China in on of the
following three scopes
1. A partner for development
2. A competitor
3. or A colonizer
Debate points
Looking into the Sino-Africa relations we
must ask the following questions to get a
perspective on the influence that China has
on Africa:
1. What are China’s intentions in Africa?
2. Is China a threat or opportunity for
Africa?
3. How can China’s policies be interpreted?
1. What are China’s intentions in Africa?

• Major concern for China’s policy

makers is the interest of their
nation. Projects like the
Rejuvenation policies are planned
to maximize China’s benefits.
1. What are China’s intentions in Africa?

• China achieves this program by implementing

the five principle of peace policy and they are:
1. Perusing the concept of equality
2. Mutual non- interference
3. Mutual non- benefit
4. Mutual non- aggressiveness
5. Peaceful co- existence
1. What are China’s intentions in Africa?

• Over the past 10 years China has placed a

bigger value in African relations since big
projects like Rejuvenations policies and the
belt and road initiative rely heavily on Africa’s
involvement.
• Furthermore China has created sway in global
decisions making by having strong relations
with African leaders.
Threats posed
• Even though China and African nations believe
in equal status their always be conflict.
• China can use it economic strength to push
agenda.
• Ultimately creating tendencies that make
China look like a Neo colonist.
Opportunities gained
• By investing heavily and rapidly in Africa, China has
helped the continent growth substantially.
• By not overlooking the importance of smaller nations
have helped them with direct foreign investment.
• China has a sympathetic side as well by investing in
countries like Guinea Bissau which are not resource
reach nations. Even then China has invested almost
10 billion Yuan in countries like the one mentioned
above.
Western views
• Western nations are not enthusiastic about
the current relations between China and
Africa.
• They fear that they are losing control over the
African nations and now that China has
become a genuine global player they now fear
that they will lose a huge chunk of wealth and
influence.
My thoughts
• After looking at all this sides I
understand the delicate issue of this
topic.
• I as an Ethiopian see the investment
and role that China plays in my nation.
• I do see the ideas brought about by
both blocs and why they say what they
say but I am neutral to the case.
Conclusion and thoughts
• China is ultimately not a colonist nation but it not
simply definitive.
• China is exhibiting colonist tendencies and showing
the extent to which they will use their policies and
economies to forge their plans and future endeavors.
• As part of a citizen of a nation which is part of Africa I
do see the need to beware of our situation we find
ourselves in but I am optimistic of the future that
could be had be this relationship.
