2- Phase
A phrase is a group of words or a word plus
preposition, article or adverb.

e.g.
at home. ,
the blue book,
on a table,
, near the door ,
On the roof.

2- A collocation

• A collocation is a combination of words that are


commonly used together.

• It is important to learn collocations, because they are


important for the naturalization of one’s speech.
Besides, they broaden one’s scope for expression.

Example: Collocation

• Break a promise
• Take / have a seat
• Hardly ever= almost never
•  to make the bed
• Never ever
• to do homework

The word big is often used in collocations with a happening

The word great is often used in collocations with feelings or
qualities.

• great enjoyment

The word large is often used in collocations involving
numbers and measurements.

• a large proportion
• a large quantity

The word strong is often used in collocations with facts and opinions:

• strong argument
• strong emphasis
• strong evidence
• a strong contrast
• a strong commitment

• Heavy is used for some weather conditions…
• heavy rain

• heavy fog
the word heavy is also used for people with bad
habits:
• a heavy drinker
• a heavy smoker
• a heavy drug user

The word deep is used for some strong feelings:

• It is also used in these expressions:

• in deep trouble
Note :
• in a deep sleep (when the person won’t wake
up easily)
