ONE WAY ANOVA

PRESENTED BY,
LIZ MARIA
ANOVA

1. Analysis of variance

2. Uses F distribution ( never takes a value less than one)

3. proposed by R A Fisher (to deal with problems in

agricultural research)
PROBLEM :

Three processes A, B, & C are tested to see whether their outputs are equal.
The following observations of outputs are given. (sig level =5 %)
Process A 10 12 13 11 10 14 15 13
Process B 9 11 10 12 13
Process C 11 10 15 14 12 13
SETUP HYPOTHESIS

Ho : µ1=µ2=µ3 ( Outputs of all the process are equal)

Hı : µ1≠µ2≠µ3 (Outputs of all the process are not equal)

ONE WAY ANOVA – TABLE

Source of Sum of squares Degree of Mean sum of F ratio

variation freedom squares

Between rows SSR r-1 MSR = SSR/r-1

MSR/MSE

Residual or Error SSE n-r MSE = SSE/n-r

Total SST n-1

CORRECTION FACTOR

Correction factor = T²/ N

(In problem)

Total = 228 , Number of items = 19

CF = 228²/19 = 2736
SUM OF SQUARES BETWEEN ROWS (SSR)

SSR = [(R1²/n1) + (R2²/n2) + …+ (Rn²/n) ] - CF

(In problem)
SSR = [(98²/8) + (55²/5) + (75²/6)] – 2736
= 7
TOTAL SUM OF SQUARES

SST = [x1² + x2² +… + xn²] - CF

SSE = SST - SSR
(In problem)
SST = 2794 – 2736 = 58

SSE = 58 – 7 = 51
Source of Sum of squares Degree of Mean sum of F ratio
variation freedom squares

Between rows 7 2 3.5

3.5/3.18 = 1.1

Residual or error 51 16 3.18

Total 58 18
Conclusion

degree of freedom ( r-1, n-1)

df (2, 18) @ 5%
Table value = 3.55
1.1 < 3.55
So,
We accept Ho.
Output of all processes are equal
