BACKGROUND
• How applicable are the western theories and
methods in understanding the Filipino personality,
situation, and environment? – question that Filipino
scholars wanted to answer at the turn of the 20th
century.
• In the late 1960’s , the discontent Filipino scholars
started to take shape.
• The UP Department of Psychology, through the
initiative of Virgilio Enriquez, introduced the
concept of Sikolohiyang Filipino.
What is Filipino
Psychology?
It is an Indigenous Psychology.

The scientific study of the ethnicity, society

and culture of a people and the application
to psychological practice of indigenous
knowledge rooted in the people’s ethnic
heritage and consciousness.
Kahulugan

• Sikolohiyang bunga ng
karanasan, kaisipan, at
oryentasyon ng Pilipino,
batay sa kabuuang paggamit
ng kultura at wikang Pilipino.

Ang paggamit ng mga konsepto at panukat
na hindi naaangkop sa isang kultura ay
maaaring magpakita ng hindi tamang
interpretasyon ng kilos at pag-iisip ng isang
indibidwal.
