Definition

 Kidneydisease is a malfunction of
kidney organs.
 The kidneys are two organs located
in your abdominal cavity on either
side of the spine in the middle of
your back, just above the waist
The kidneys have several roles, namely:

 Cleanse the blood of toxins, waste, and excess fluids

 Maintain the balance of salt and minerals in your blood
 Helps regulate blood pressure
 It produces erythropoietin, which functions to make red
blood cells
 Produces active vitamin D compounds needed to maintain
bone health
The
symptoms
Signs and symptoms of kidney disease
develop over time
if kidney damage progresses slowly.
Signs and symptoms of kidney disease can
include:
The symptoms
•Nausea
•Gag
•Loss of appetite
•Looks weak and listless (lackluster)
•Having a sleep disorder
•Rarely urinating
•Decreased urine volume
•Changes in urine color,
sometimes urine can also be mixed with blood
•Urine looks foamy
•Muscle twitches and cramps
•HiccupSwelling of the feet and ankles
•Dry skin that often experiences itching that never
goes away
•Chest pain, if fluid accumulates around the lining of
the heartDisorders of rhythm or heart rate
•Shortness of breath, if fluid accumulates in the lungs
•High blood pressure (hypertension) that is difficult to
control
•Decreased concentration and awareness
•The signs and symptoms of kidney disease are often non-
specific.
•Because the symptoms of kidney disease are often caused
by other diseases.
Cause
Type 1 or type 2 diabetes
High blood pressure
Glomerulonephritis, inflammation of the kidney filtering unit (glomerulus)
Interstitial nephritis,
inflammation of the kidney tubules and surrounding structures
Polycystic kidney disease
Complications
Fluid retention, which can cause swelling in the arms and legs,
high blood pressure, or fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema)
A sudden increase in potassium levels in your blood
(hyperkalemia), which can interfere with your heart's ability to
function and can be life-threatening
Heart and blood vessel disease (cardiovascular disease)
Diagnosis
How do you diagnose kidney disease?

• A blood test to check your

GFR
• Urine test to check the
albumin in your urine
Medicines & Medications

What is the treatment for kidney disease?

 Depending on the underlying cause, several types of kidney disease can
be treated.
 However, often, chronic kidney disease cannot be cured.
 In general, treatment consists of steps to help control symptoms,
reduce complications, and slow down the severity of the disease.
 If your kidney becomes severely damaged,
you may need treatment for end-stage kidney disease.
Medicines & Medications

Drugs
 Your doctor may prescribe ACE inhibitors
(captopril, enalpril, fosionopril) or ARBs
(azilsartan, eprosartan, irbesartan,
losartan, olmesartan, valsartan) to help
control blood pressure and reduce levels of
protein in the urine.
Medicines & Medications

 Diet
 Usually doctors recommend a diet low in
salt, protein, potassium, and so on. Not
only that, patients with this disease must
also limit their fluid intake so it does not
accumulate in the body
Medicines & Medications

Ifyour kidneys are unable to filter

waste and cleanse their own fluids and
you have complete kidney failure,
then you have end-stage kidney
disease. At that time, dialysis or a
kidney transplant is needed.
