Lead

 The introduction of a news story.


 tell the news story in a nutshell.
 may be presented either in a single
word, in a phrase, in a clause, in a
complete sentence or in a paragraph.
Kinds of Lead
1. Conventional/Summary Lead

A. What Lead - used when the event or occasion


is given more prominence than the character who
is involved.

Example:
The Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET)
will be given on August 17, 2014 at the
examination centers earlier announced by the
Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

B. Who Lead - used when the person involved


would be given more prominence over that of the
occasion.

Example:
President Joseph L. Gallego will be the guest
speaker at the Future Mentor's Society (FMS)
seminar on "Integration Pedagogy in Teaching",
in July 11, 2014 at Manuel V. Gallego Foundation
Colleges Inc.(MVGFCI).
Conventional/Summary Lead

D. When Lead - used when the date accounts for


special importance as in setting deadlines.
 
Example:
July 16, 2014, is the deadline for filing the LET
application forms for the next teacher's board
examination scheduled August 17, 2014.

C. Where Lead - used when the place where the
event shall be held should be given special
importance for reason that no prominent person is
involved.

Example:
Baguio City, the summer capital of the
Philippines will be the site of the forthcoming Miss
International pageant.

E. Why Lead - used when the reason for
conducting the activity is given more prominence
than any other aspect.

Example:
On account of the deadening effect of the
typhoon Yolanda, around six hundred students from
the secondary level in the affected areas dropped out
from school last year. This was disclosed by the
DepEd Secretary, ...

F. How Lead - used when the method of achieving
the story is given special mention.

Example:
By conducting a blood letting activity, in
coordination with Philippine Red Cross, the Manuel
V. Gallego Foundation Colleges was able to collect
86 bags of blood for patients who are in need of
blood donations.
2. Grammatical Beginning Lead

This form of lead is introduced by


phrases or clauses. The facts
called for by the W's and H's are
not found in the introductory
phrases are answered in the main
or principal clauses.

A. Infinitive Phrase Lead - introduced
by an infinitive phrase.

Example:
To encourage participants in the cheer
dancing competition, the coach pledges
that if the team wins, a 3 - day trip to
Honkong shall be awarded.

B. Participial Phrase Lead - introduced by
the present or past partciple of the verb.

Example:
Hoping to bring home the bacon, the
MVGFC basketball team trained rigorously
for one month under the supervision of a
former UAAP coach.

C. Gerundial Phrase Lead -


introduced by a gerund.
 
Example:
Winning the first place in the news
writing contest during my college days
was one of my valuable achievements.

D. Prepositional Phrase Lead -


introduced by a preposition

Example:
With brooms and rakes, the scholars
of MVGFC cleaned the school premises
pursuant to the Clean and Green Drive of
the school.
