Introduction
Although accidents attributable to chemical reactivity are less
frequent compared to fires and explosions, the consequences are
dramatic, destructive, and often injurious to personnel.
These materials are unstable. Light, air, and heat accelerate the
formation of peroxides.
Bottle of lsopropyl Ether
Ethers should be stored in metal containers.
The investigation indicated that the vessel contents were held for
11 hr.
A steam leak into the jacket brought the temperature to about 150
°C.
Nitrobenzene Sulfonic Acid Decomposition
Steam was applied to the reactor jacket to heat the sulfuric acid
and an organic material to a temperature of 70 °C.
The two operators turned the agitator off and also shut off the
steam.
The two operators were drenched and both died from these
injuries.
Compute the RHI for isopropyl ether, and compare the result to that
shown in Table 13-4. Explain why the RHI is relatively low.
Solution
The RHI is computed using Equation 13-1
from Table 13-4
Td = 712 °K and
Ea = 63.5 kcal/mol
