FOOD CYCLE &

FOOD CHAIN
A group of food
chains constituting
all or a significant
FOOD part of the food
relations that enable
CYCLE survival of the
population of a
community is known
as Food Cycle
The transfer of food energy
from the producers, through a
WHAT IS series of organisms
FOOD (herbivores to carnivores to
decomposers) with repeated
CHAIN eating and being eaten, is
known as food chain.

3
Components of Food chain
01 Producers - ‘Base’ of the food chain
02 Herbivores - Feed on producers
03 Omnivores - Feed on both plants and animals
04 Carnivores - Feed on herbivores, omnivores, & other carnivores
lst level carnivore - Feeds on herbivores
2nd level carnivore - Feeds on 1st level carnivores

05 Decomposers
the 'final' consumer group
use energy available in dead plants and animals
transform organic material into inorganic material
Food chains are of three types:

01 Grazing or Predator food chain

02 Parasitic food chain

03 Saprophytic or detritus food chain.

01 Grazing or Predator food chain:
This food chain starts from green plants (producers),
passes through the herbivores (primary consumers)
and ends with carnivores (secondary or tertiary
consumers).
Autotroph → Herbivore → Primary Carnivore
→Secondary
Carnivore → Tertiary Carnivore → Decomposer etc.
02 Parasitic food chain:
In this type of food chain either the producer or the
consumer is parasitized. So the food passes to the
smaller organism.
The energy transfer through this kind of food chain is
not significant.
Producer→ Herbivores→ Parasite→ Hyper parasites
Trees→ Fruit eating birds→ Lice and bugs→ Bacteria
and fungi
03 Saprophytic or Detritus Food chain:
This type of food chain starts from dead organic matter of
decaying animals and plant bodies to the micro-organisms
and then to detritus feeding organism and to other predators.
The food chain depends mainly on the entry of organic
matter produced in another system
The organism of the food chain includes algae, bacteria,
fungi, protozoa, insects, nematodes etc.
Significance of Food Cycle and Food
01 They help in maintaining the ecological balance.
Chain
02 They help in understanding the feeding relations among
organisms.
03
Energy flow and nutrient cycling take place through them.
04
The movement of some toxic substances (like DDT) in the
ecosystem, sprayed to kill the pests and insects, through
the various trophic levels, their accumulation at the
highest trophic level, etc. can be studied(bio
