lands surrounding the Inca
heartland of Cuzco, until
the coming of the
Spaniards in 1532.
Machu Picchu

 Citadel atop a mountainous


jungle along the Urubamba
River in Peru.
 One of the most important
archaeological sites in the world.
 Place of worship to the sun god.
 Intihuatana (pyramid built so the
Inca could speak to their gods).
Religion
 Several polytheistic religions.
 Existence of Pachamama and Viracocha
 Believed every mountain peak was either the home of a god or an actual god.
Society
 Ayllus(clans of families who lived and worked together).
 Each allyu was supervised by a curaca or chief.
 Families lived in thatched-roof houses built of stone and mud.

LLamas

 Most important animal.


 Llamas provided the Inca with wool, food, and a
way to transport goods.
Random Facts

 Created a highway and road system in Peru with over 18,000 miles of roads.
 Had a type of postal system where relay messengers ran across rope bridges to deliver
communications to the next team.
 Performed successful skull surgeries.
 Administered intelligence tests to Incan children and based on their results they were either
taught a trade or sent to school to become administrators or part of the nobility.
