DENTAL MANAGEMENT

OF DEPRESSION
It involves different therapies:
• Psychotherapy
• Pharmacotherapy
• Psychosocial rehabilitation
PSYCHOTHERAPY
• It includes: Behavioural therapy, cognitive therapy, interpersonal therapy,
relaxation techniques and supportive therapy.
• Behavioural therapy: Includes application of scientific principles to the solution of
clinical problems. (educate and assist)
• Cognitive therapy: it is aimed at changing thought patterns behavior through new
practices and thinking.(psychological treatment for fears and phobias of dental
treatment)
• Interpersonal therapy: For solving unresolved griefs, role disputes, social defecits.
• Supportive therapy: Based on doctor-patient relationship( reassurance,
clarification, advice, suggestion and teaching.) (scaling, infection controls, regular
follw-ups)

• Tricyclic and related antidepressants TCAs eg: amitryptaline
• Selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors eg: fluoxetine
• Other antidepressants eg: bupopion
• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors MAOIs eg: phenelzine
PSYCHOSOCIAL REHABILITATION
• It deals with improving individual competencies and introducing
environmental changes.
• Rehabilitation is provided( hospital or community)
• Creation of long term system of social support(primary care, family
care, backup psychiatric support, community supervisors)
• Practical skills to cope up with disabilities
• Teaching living skills, diet, personal hygiene etc..).
