Background of the Study
• The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program( 4Ps)is one of the
program implemented by the government that provides cash
grants to the people whose income is classified as below the
poverty line. This program lead by the Department of Social
Welfare and Development aimed to improve the health,
nutrition and the education of children aged 0-18 years of age.
The 4Ps aimed to attain the dual objectives crafted during the
time of President Benigno Aguino along with the
implementation of the program.
Background of the Study
• These dual objectives include: first, Social assistance in terms of
monetary support given to extremely poor families to help them sustain
their children’s needs and education; second, Social development to
eradicate extreme poverty and hunger. 4Ps operate in all 17 regions in the
Philippines, covering 79 provinces, 143 cities and 1,484 municipalities.
Meeting these beneficiaries during their regular Family Development
Sessions, the researchers could hear different stories about how their
lives improve because of the program, but there are still others who
shared different experiences and stories which seemed to be that they
are not fully satisfied with what the program offered to them.
Purpose of the Study
• The purpose of this research is to explore the lived
experience of 4Ps beneficiaries in Valencia Negros
Oriental.
Problem Statement
• The researchers are interested to discover how their
experiences as 4Ps beneficiaries contribute in terms of
improving their lives, and the lives of their children after
receiving cash grants from the government. Further, the
researchers would also like to identify the strategies they use
in utilizing the cash assistance so that they will be able to
improve their way of living. The researchers are also hoping to
gain insights from the respondents about their total
experience as beneficiaries of the program.
Problem Statement
• The main question and the sub-questions are as follows:
• What is the lived experience of the 4Ps beneficiaries In
Valencia, Negros Oriental?
• How would the 4Ps beneficiaries describe their experience ?
• How do those experiences affect their perspective towards?
• How do they perceive opportunities and challenges met?
Data Collection
• Data collection will be done through a semi-structured
interview to the 4Ps beneficiaries . Field observations
will also be done to supplement information.
Research Design
• The approach to be used in this study is the transcendental or descriptive
phenomenology. The aim of transcendental phenomenology is to “gain
an understanding of the subjective meaning of everyday lived experience
in the participant’s language” (Suryani, Welch, & Cox, 2016)
• Transcendental phenomenology as a design is best suited in this study
because this is concerned with the real-world encounters of the 4Ps
beneficiaries as they journey towards the improvement of their live and
their children’s lives.
Bracketing
• Bracketing is done when “the researcher should
declare personal biases, assumptions, and
presuppositions and put them aside (Gearing, 2004, as
cited in Shosha, 2012, p. 32). This process would assert
the objectiveness of data analysis (Ahern, 1999;
Speziale & Carpenter, 2007 as cited in Shisha, 2012, p.
32)
Data Analysis
• The data in this study would be analyzed using the
Colaizzi’s method. This method fits the study since this
would identify the essence of the lived experience of
the respondents. This research would adhere to the 7-
step process of data analysis as prescribed by Colaizzi.
Significance of the Study
• This study would be very beneficial to the program
provider and the stakeholders for them to improve in
the implementation of the 4Ps program. The findings
could also be used to identify whether the experiences
of the 4Ps beneficiaries transformed them and their
children to become good citizens of the society or not.
