Introduction
 Activated carbon, also called
activated charcoal, is a form of
carbon processed to have small,
low volume pores that increase
the surface area available for
adsorption.
 one gram of activated carbon has the surface

area of 3,000m2.
 Gas used here is hot combustion gas of
wood, peanut shells
 Multi stage fluidization

unit because of more

uniform residence
time
distribution for solids.
 In Figure b solids move

from one stage to

another stage.
 Fast fluidised bed to produce
charcoal from saw dust.
 And good feed for above beds.
 Here charcoal is prepared to remove
pollutants from water
 Strong and inexpensive
 Feed :petroleum pitch
 Temp: 9500C
 Can produce 1000 tons of

active carbon per year

Applications
 Can be used in air purification, gold
purification, metal extraction, water
purification, medicine, sewage treatment,
agriculture, fuel storage etc
